They are hunting for an attack message. The manufactured issues tried yesterday (Trump lied about discussing "Mexico will pay for the wall") didn't work. So, the angle being used is the generic one, "give us more details."

With regard to why McCain (and other incumbents) get re-elected time after time, it's very rare for an incumbent to get "primaried out." That is because most voters (who would vote for change) are just not motivated to vote in a run-off primary election. Especially at the tail end of summer when most people are focused on vacations and the Labor Day weekend. Meanwhile, the incumbent is able to call in his chits and GOTV, assuring himself of an easy victory nearly every time.

It's a poor excuse not to do your civic duty but a harsh reality nevertheless.
