People in other parts of the country do not understand that Mexico city, and around, is SPANIARD. Most of the rest of the country is spanish and native indian mix.
And its correct, they look at them as second class and scum.
I have personally talked to those elites you reffer to, and they are laughing at us for accepting them because they will work untill they find out that they can live off the rest of us and then quit working.
You should see the areas where these people live. Garbage ALL OVER the place.

And there are plenty of stories about indios getting jacked up by the federales because they don't speak spanish and can't prove they are Mexican citizens from the provinces.

The elite are called “Peninsulars” meaning direct descent from the inhabitants of the Spanish peninsula. They've a “caste” system there since Cortés. It's true in all of Latin America as well as the Philippines though it may not be as obvious.

I think, and I could be wrong, that the Mexican elites are descended from wealthy Spaniards. The Mexicans (peons) that sneak across the border are descended from indigenous native people. The Mexican elites don't want them and don't care if they leave in droves. I've seen both and there is a world of difference. The Mexican elites appear to be more white with fine features while the poor native Mexicans have dark complexions and features more like native Americans.
