Or we could simply sponsor an insurrection in Northern Mexico and turn it into an American friendly buffer state with a shorter border to defend further south.

Mexico is the route used by illegals from SA; Nicaraguans, Venezualins et al., to the US so Mexico has much to gain from mutual border security. No nation should be ‘invaded’. Hope the Mexican president sees this as a benefit.
