School officials decision to ban students from displaying the American Flag at a recent football game is creating controversy in a South Carolina school district.
On Friday, Travelers Rest High School principal Lou Lavely banned students from carrying American flags into a football game against Berega High School, because a lot of students at Berega are Hispanic. Lavely contends the American flag could have been used to taunt those students, WNCN reports.
Some events at last evenings football game have resulted in concerns being raised in our community. I am writing to assure that any decisions made regarding American flags being permitted into the game were made in the best interests of all attending the game and in the spirit of patriotism and respect for our flag, Lavely wrote in response to Facebook backlash about the ban, which turned away several students who came to the game with American flags.
Any decision to not allow the American flag to be used in an improper taunting, unsportsmanlike manner is first and foremost in the interests of promoting the safety and well-being of all in attendance at school events. This decision would be made anytime that the American flag, or any other symbol, sign, cheer, or action on the part of our fans would potentially compromise the safety of all in attendance at a school event.

The high school is Berea, not Berega - doesn’t say much for the quality of the reporting.
Colin Kaepernick’s kind of football game.
He needs to leave the country, get out, never come back.
So Hispanics choose to be here and yet the American Flag might “offend” their little sensibilities?
Good grief....FIRE EVERYONE associated with this insanity
Half the population of the USA needs to be “fired.”
“Good grief....FIRE EVERYONE associated with this insanity”
Unless that team came from another country, if anything the flag should be proudly displayed. Just another left wing anti American a$$hat who is looking to join the Clinton campaign.
If they ban the American flag then they should forfeit ALL federal money.
Actually, the school nickname for the TR athletic teams, if I remember correctly, is the “Devildogs” - a nickname for the Marines. As you suggest, that would be inflammatory to certain groups in and of itself.
what does one say to self-righteous, America-slighting, thought police that would be considered acceptable in public, besides, 'you're fired'?
This is so sickening that it’s not worth reading.
Who needs an ulcer?
Is there any chance at all of parents, students and other residents banding together and addressing this with the School Admins as well as the School Board? Barring that, I’d say this calls for some ‘free speech’ in the form of civilly disobeying such an asinine edict.
Besides that, I wonder if they also banned the flying of any other flag, especially the Mexican rag? It’s not been an uncommon thing to see that used as a taunt directed at Americans.
Peach
There was a day Our Flag was honored and respected...we need to return that day to the Nation and to Washington, D.C. and the professional politicians there are scared out of their panties...
TIME TO WAKE UP VOTERS...MILLIONS AND MILLIONS HAVE FOUGHT AND DIED FOR THAT FLAG...RESPECT NEEDS TO BE RETURNED...
Ol’ Strom wouldn’t know his state any more, and he’s only been gone 13 years.
So what are they trying to say..that Hispanics hate our flag..if they do they can LEAVE..Mexico is right down there not hard to find and you can cross the border EASILY
Need to kick the #### out of the commies who have taken over our schools.
Only way to reeducate the young.
I’d still be standing on my school board member’s desk today if a special meeting of the board had not already been scheduled to take action on this matter. Enough school patrons making board members’ lives uncomfortable would shortly lead to fixing the problem. School admin quickly forget they are merely employees charged with a task by those who own the school - the taxpayers.
Ideally both teams should be displaying the flag...are not both American teams?
Here’s the principal’s email address for anyone who’d care to send him a personal expression regarding this flag policy:
