Clinton unveils plans to address mental illness in U.S.

BROOKLYN, N.Y., Aug. 29 (UPI) — Hillary Clinton on Monday released a six-part plan to address nearly 50 million Americans afflicted with mental health problems. “Americans with mental health conditions and their families need our support,” she said in her proposal that runs more than 5,000 words. “The economic impact of mental illness is enormous – at nearly $200 billion per year nationwide in lost earnings] —and the human cost is worse.

Yes, they did......leaving many with mental illness homeless and out on the streets when before there were institutions for the mentally ill which were compassionate and caring.

Given that track record, don’t think this “new” initiative will do anything but make things worse.

Mental illness imposes severe and often heartbreaking burdens on its sufferers and their families. Better and more readily available care for the mentally ill is needed, as are funding mechanisms that put more of the cost burden on the public at large. Much of what the police and courts do at great expense already is to sort out the dangerously mentally ill from the genuinely criminal, with marginal cases cycling with little treatment between the commission of crimes, capture, and confinement in jail or prison.
