TRAVELERS REST, S.C. – School officials’ decision to ban students from displaying the American Flag at a recent football game is creating controversy in a South Carolina school district.

On Friday, Travelers Rest High School principal Lou Lavely banned students from carrying American flags into a football game against Berega High School, because a lot of students at Berega are Hispanic. Lavely contends the American flag could have been used to taunt those students, WNCN reports.

“Some events at last evening’s football game have resulted in concerns being raised in our community. I am writing to assure that any decisions made regarding American flags being permitted into the game were made in the best interests of all attending the game and in the spirit of patriotism and respect for our flag,” Lavely wrote in response to Facebook backlash about the ban, which turned away several students who came to the game with American flags.

“Any decision to not allow the American flag to be used in an improper ‘taunting,’ unsportsmanlike manner is first and foremost in the interests of promoting the safety and well-being of all in attendance at school events. This decision would be made anytime that the American flag, or any other symbol, sign, cheer, or action on the part of our fans would potentially compromise the safety of all in attendance at a school event.”

Lavely’s prepared statement assured community members that officials “have the utmost respect for our flag and strive to display the highest levels of patriotism,” and the school supports veterans, but the potential for taunting was too much to allow the American flag inside of the stadium.

If unto some composite deity of “God-and-country” — that composite deity has lost plausible existence, and maybe for excellent reason. I believe we’ve had an idol in our pantheon and not realized it. An actual jealous God can only will it to go away.

The salvation of Christ must be appreciated, and embraced, anew. As the old saw goes (admittedly not directly quoted in the bible, but backed up by biblical principles) — God has no grandchildren. If each generation will not freshly acknowledge the Lord, then it will be, of course and sadly, lost.

Taunting at a sporting event? Oh, the horrors! How could such a thing be possible?

Here’s an idea. Allow the freedom of expression instead of trying to stifle it.

You clowns in positions of authority are supposed to be teaching young people, which includes how to behave. Instead, you shirk the responsibilities to act as positive influences and act as censors.

If it were up to me, I’d fire the lot of you. At the very least, I’d withdraw my kid from your “school” and teach them at home.

Even better: Refuse to attend the game. Football is religion in the South, and a half-empty stadium on Friday night will send major shockwaves through the community.

Let the Superintendent and the School Board president know why you're not at the game. I promise you, if enough people do this, it will get everyone's attention.

A school's ACT scores may be in the tank, but that's no reason to panic. Boycotting high school football games... that's another matter entirely.

How about we fire the Principal; and all the teachers.

Seems these people don’t realize they are in America .. not some foreign country.

Time to re-educate some of the teachers/principals.

Remember, these schools receive $32/per student from the federal govt. The only way these schools pay attention is to keep your child out of school. It requires planning and organization - but you’re great parents and you can do it.

After just a few days, or a couple of weeks, the school will finally listen to your complaints .. no Muslim teaching; no climate change garbage, etc., whatever it is that the parents want changed. IT CAN BE DONE.
