I think Governor Abbott probably saw the RNC Convention when Cruz showed up to not endorse Trump and saw the public reaction.

No, you’re right. Abbott endorsed Cruz in the primary, though I wouldn’t go so far as to call him a Cruzbot.
I think he was just doing the usual congenial thing for the state’s favorite son.

I was a Cruzbot and gave $$$ but...I changed and voted Trump in the primary.
I can't stand Cruz now.
