I am junior and I greatly admired my father. He was an Ensign at Pearl Harbor on the USS Phoenix. He grew up in Washington, North Carolina on the Pamlico River.

Remembering . . .
August 25, 2016
I have hidden your word in my heart.
Psalm 119:11
One difficult part of growing older is the fear of dementia and the loss of short-term memory. But Dr. Benjamin Mast, an expert on the topic of Alzheimers disease, offers some encouragement. He says that patients brains are often so well worn and habitual that they can hear an old hymn and sing along to every word. He suggests that spiritual disciplines such as reading Scripture, praying, and singing hymns cause truth to become embedded in our brains, ready to be accessed when prompted.
In Psalm 119:11, we read how the power of hiding Gods words in our heart can keep us from sinning. It can strengthen us, teach us obedience, and direct our footsteps (vv. 28, 67, 133). This in turn gives us hope and understanding (vv. 49, 130). Even when we begin to notice memory slips in ourselves or in the life of a loved one, Gods Word, memorized years earlier, is still there, stored up or treasured in the heart (v. 11 esv, nasb). Even as our minds lose the keen edge of youth, we know that Gods words, hidden in our hearts, will continue to speak to us.
Nothingnot even failing memoriescan separate us from His love and care. We have His word on it.
Lord, You are such an amazing comfort to us. Thank You that our salvation and spiritual well-being does not depend on our failing minds and bodies, but on You and Your faithfulness to Your Word.
God's promises never fail.
Psalm 119 is well known as the longest chapter in the Bible. It is an acrostic (each section beginning with a consecutive letter of the Hebrew alphabet) that praises the goodness and value of Gods law. While it may be tempting to ignore the significance of what the writer of this psalm says and consider it mere poetic license, Scripture repeatedly praises the law of God as good and valuable. Jesus Himself affirmed the value and benefit of the law on numerous occasions. Most notably in His Sermon on the Mount when He said, Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them (Matt. 5:17).

Here’s an interesting thing about names... back before high resolution Doppler scans people never knew before delivery what sex a child would be so they had two names ready...
My Mom told me my name if I had been a girl was to be Robyn.
If you don’t know what your other possible name was to be ask your Mom... it’s kind of interesting :-)

My original name here was ‘Bullshirt’ I was here a while and then had a HD crash. I was ‘Bullshirt’ on all the old BBS systems before the internet was really happening, way before FR existed. so I used the same name. I also went by the nik ‘wildMan’ for a while on some of those old BBS systems, you know, the ones where you had to call up phone numbers to connect to their ‘bulletin board systems’ (BBS) that people would run on their personal computers before the internet made all that obsolete. Yes, I'm an oldtimer when it comes to computers. I think my very first sys was a TS-80 that really didn't do much. I also had a few Commodore 64s in the early days. If I remember correctly, my first modem was an 8 baud. Lol.
When I installed a new system after my HD crash I didn't realize I could contact the admin and get my old name and password from them. So I made a new FR perssona ‘Bullish’ back in '97
Which I remain to this day.

Nuocmam is a Vietnamese fermented fish sauce. An Thoi Nuocmam was considered the #1 brand. My ship was anchored off this premium fish sauce producer’s factory in Vietnam. Imagine soy sauce made from sardines. The smell was enough to gag a maggot and if breeze conditions were wrong there was no escape. If you can get it past your nose, nuocmam is a great flavor enhancer to many SE Asian dishes.

The Rufii was a newsletter for students of the University of Southern California School of International Relations, from which I received my first master's degree. It was named for the Rufus B. von KleinSmid Center, in which the school is located. Von KleinSmid served as president of the university from 1921-1947 and oversaw its transformation into an academic as well as an athletic powerhouse.
