Oh, man. The damage tornadoes inflict is unbelievable.
My heart goes out to these people.
Whenever I feel inclined to complain about the snow we get, I remind myself that it could be a lot worse.
As an aside, your handle is probably the 2nd most awesome and clever FReeper name in history.
Only a 3500 watt that I borrowed. Big enough to run fridge, my computer and a fan. Would have gone to motel somewhere if I couldn’t have had that.
Lived here 10 years and have never been without power for more than 2 hours, just one time. Sometimes a flicker.
News report today said 35 Tornados’s touched down in Indina to Western Ohio....
I used to have flicker when the heavier appliances would kick on.
I had about 290 feet overhead cable from the street to the house; with one pole for support in the middle.
As the pole was deteriourating, the power folks were going to replace it, so I asked about underground power.
The guys said all new housing is getting underground and they prefer it that way. If I wanted it I’d have to pay for (or dig) the trench, but not the wire.
Asking about the price for the trench; $1.00 a foot sure sounded good to me. (I should have found out what the new pole was going to cost THEM!)
Anyway, the underground wire has MUCH greater current handling ability, and now any flicker (voltage drop) is un-noticeable.
Asking about the old wire; they said they’d just scrap it.
I said it’s a lot larger gauge than runs to the barn now, what would it cost me to keep it?
What wire? they said. So the barn is better served now; too!
