I was just thinking of the beginning of the movie BATTLESHIP. This is what happened too.

Anyway I call BS. Earthlike? No... Radiation from the two suns would have rendered it uninhabitable.

Move along earthlings. Nothing to see here...

There could be all kinds of reasons for the secrecy, like protecting the planet from us exploiting its resources for our own purposes like we did Pandora. What a mess that was. :)

Maybe the secrecy was afforded to give time to confirm what should have been inevitable: Life. That is, of course, if you go in for the "law of life" stuff.

So perhaps the surprise will be in what is not found on this planet. We experienced that disappointment in the Scientific Community with the Mars missions already.

"Another Earth" (IMDB link)

Highly recommended movie. Very engaging story.

The Sun is a British scandal sheet and sensational rag.
This is not a “second Earth”. Fantasizing about this being a duplicate of our planet doesn’t make it so.
“so close by.” 4.2 light years. We have no way of approaching a speed high enough to take us there in any usable period of time. Very likely, humans will, in the future. But not now.

Maybe it could be reached in a single human lifetime. But then the signal back to Earth announcing "We made it and our host Mr. (?) Qzixxlmmrttphurrrt wants to say hello" will take another four plus years.

Humanity has dealt with this kind of communication dilemma before, during the Earth's colonization by those evil white men whose descendants now run space exploration. A letter from an East India Company clerk in Calcutta back to London would take months to reach London. And that was barring incidents with storms, mutinies, pirates, and mail mistakenly used for shipboard toilet paper. So we'd probably figure out a way to cope but it won't look anything like Star Trek and real time sub-space chats.

The only reason the power that be would cover up the existence of aliens and other worlds would be that they don;t want us to leave so they can control us...

They don’t want a repeat of events which would lead to an “America in Space” revolting against the monarchy again....

Unless and until we achieve light speed we are not going anywhere any time soon. Not today and not tomorrow. These are the facts.

For in excess of 50 years I have believed that earth is not the only planet in our universe which will support life forms such as are found here.

I also believe that we humans are not the only intelligent life forms in the universe.

HST, I have trouble understanding why some so-called “intelligent” life forms on this planet are and/or support LIEberals, Democrats, Socialists, Marxists, Islam, etc., etc.

Upon careful consideration of the above statement, I can only conclude that life forms which are and/or support them are, plainly and simply, DUMBASSES!

And, furthermore, since there are dumbasses on earth, it follows that if there is another inhabitable planet in our universe (and surely there is!), there will be dumbasses there as well!

I wonder if they deal with their dumbasses as ingorantly and clumsily as we do?
