Thee political world is all atwitter following Donald Trumps statement last Thursday in Charlotte, North Carolina that, believe it or not, he regrets having said the wrong thing in the past, particularly where it may have caused personal pain, a list which might include Heidi Cruz, Megyn Kelly, and Ghazala Khan.
I was less astonished than most, however, because I noticed a substantial and important change in Mr. Trumps campaigning more than week earlier. Although I mentioned it during my radio show, it seemed to go mostly unnoticed in the broader media, perhaps because of justifiable initial skepticism.
In Abingdon, Virginia on Wednesday, August 10, Donald Trump gave nearly an hour of remarks in a tone entirely different from what he had offered in public before. No yelling, no venomous rasping in the back of his throat, and, although he was as strong as ever in his positions on issues (several of which, most particularly trade and NAFTA, I strongly disagree with him on), the seething anger and divisiveness which had characterized so much of his campaign to date was simply gone. .....
.....While Trump had been on good behavior briefly in the past only to return to Trump being Trump mere hours later, the Abingdon speech felt different. It felt as if someone at this point I suspect it was Kellyanne Conway had gotten him to realize that the path he was on was doomed to fail and that a possible road to victory did not involve forsaking policy positions but simply abandoning a poisonous rhetorical style.
I thought to myself and said to my wife
If Trump had been doing this for the past couple of months, hed be beating Hillary right now.

"While Trump had been on good behavior briefly in the past only to return to 'Trump being Trump' mere hours later..."
After a preface and disclaimer like that, who could possibly take this guy seriously?
I guess Gramma Hitlery's super-deluxe walker (Huma's arm) was at her Mosque for a tune-up that day.
Phoniest frozen smile ever.
Trump’s sense of timing and is probably somewhat better than average.
She never shows her arms. They must look like hell.
“I wish they wouldnt play up this media meme that Trump was in trouble and has turned it around.”
The striking thing is not that they live in a fantasy world, but that so many people have stepped outside the bubble and are seeing the fantasy for what it is.
This might actually be a good time to proselytize.
They noticed, they just don't want the public to notice. It does not fit the template of the reckless world smasher they have been painting him with. They want the evil witch to win.
:: trust that he knows what hes doing ::
I’m just hoping that some smart-cookie is watching and taking notes. A Tea Party type governor, businessman or past-politician (Like Giuliani).
Bush43 had many opportunities to crush the Dhimmicrats after 9/11 but he played “politics as usual” and tried to get them to go along.
That’s a political war he lost.
Trump gave great speeches after Orlando and the speech he made about Hillary, but they didn’t get much press.
Trying to make EVERY photo into evidence of her decrepitude doesn’t help.
Phase III Of the campaign
Agree. Guy ends his insufferably snooty piece claiming Trump still hasn't "earned" his vote and "may never do so." (A Cruzlim tell.)
Then who the hell cares what he thinks?
He was up against a slew of professional empty-suit politicians and knew he had to differentiate himself from the crowd, while also keeping himself in the news. He got millions in free advertising doing this.
Furthermore...
Thanks, great tidbits. Our founders were a bunch of rascals, no doubt. Human and flawed, yet inspired. My kind of fellows.
“but he played politics as usual
When Bush pushed ethanol on us and let Ted Kennedy own his education agenda he really made us mad. When he partnered with the Grifters Clinton and started calling them his relatives, he totally lost us for good, no matter what Bush.
A fine compendium of information.
If I were responsible for his campaign, I would work some of these shots into his ads.
Re: the ground game perceived lack- I quit second guessing Trump back in the spring. Now I don’t cringe when he says or does something that once would have appeared off or silly. He has shown time after time that his sense of what works and what it is time for is probably better than anyone else’s in the public field.
“Too bad no one sees this side of The Donald.”
I agree ... it would be nice to see a few ads with a more personal, smiling Trump.
“.. doesnt help”
I doubt it hurts...?
