Legalized pot is making America’s lower class poorer and less responsible
New York Post ^ | 8-20-16 | Naomi Schaefer Riley

(Snip)

The middle and upper classes have been the ones out there pushing for decriminalization and legalization measures, and they have also tried to demolish the cultural taboo against smoking pot. But they themselves have chosen not to partake very much. Which is not surprising. Middle-class men and women who have jobs and families know that this is not a habit they want to take up with any regularity because it will interfere with their ability to do their jobs and take care of their families.

But the poor, who already have a hard time holding down jobs and taking care of their families, are more frequently using a drug that makes it harder for them to focus, to remember things and to behave responsibly.

(Snip)

In fact, the typical user is much more likely to be someone at the bottom of the socioeconomic ladder, whose daily life is driven, at least in part, by the question of how and where to get more marijuana. Just consider the cost. Almost a third of users are spending a tenth of their income on marijuana. And 15 percent of users spend nearly a quarter of their income to purchase the drug. The poor have not only become the heaviest users, but their use is making them poorer.

To all the middle-class professionals out there reading this: Do you know anyone who spends a quarter of their income on pot? Of course not. But these are the people our policies and attitudes are affecting.

The illegal pot sellers are renting houses in middle class neighborhoods, diverting the electricity and plumbing to establish an indoor pot farm totally destroying the house.

This happened to my landlady with one of her other properties. It was meth, but same damage. They had to completely rewire the house and do massive repairs.

That was the biggest mistake ever made regarding this issue. Throwing Americans in cages over it was nothing short of insane tyranny and certainly not what should occur in a free country.

We spent the last 50+ years spending *trillions* rebuilding, supporting and providing tax paid gifts to countries all over the planet. When we could have easily helped those Americans who honestly wanted help, instead of throwing them in cages. That is not how you treat your own citizens in a free country.

Of course we all know the WOD did absolutely nothing but increase the cost, size and scope of government in every direction.

If you abuse any substance, yes, it will affect other aspects of your life negatively.

The key is to just have a little self discipline, like this guy.

I think one of the reasons many of us don't like the legalization of pot is that it seems to simply relax people to the point where they aren't particularly concerned with bettering themselves. Now, that would be fine with me but for two things: One, if they have children, those children are going to suffer, and two, every failure they have in their lives, liberals will want a government program to address it, and taxes will go up, and up, and up, and up.

And before you assure me that you and all your toking friends are the best parents in the world, let me state that I'm a public school teacher, have been for 12 years, and the overall state of things is that potheads are not terribly involved parents, and their kids get the bright idea that pot is cool. At age 11. And they start using it. End result: they can't get through school, they're too busy giggling hysterically or falling asleep in class, or desperately texting their friends to see where they can get more.

But by all means lets keep it illegal and keep the jails full, the bankers rich and keep the drug cartels in business.

The thing is, pot does this whether it’s legal or not.

People who use pot are going to use it whether it’s legal or not.

The issue is not whether or not it’s legal, but rather, why is this person using pot at a time when he or she is supposed to be paying attention and learning in school?

Why can this person not see or why does this person choose not to see that making the decision to come to class high does not aid them in any way?

It would be no different than a person coming to class drunk. It’s just a stupid self defeating thing to do, so why do they do it?

We have to be able to get the person to say that the purpose of my going to class is to learn, so going to class under the influence of a substance completely defeats that purpose.

Not only are they wasting their time, they are also wasting their pot. Surely there is a better time to use then just prior to class.

“I think one of the reasons many of us don’t like the legalization of pot is that it seems to simply relax people to the point where they aren’t particularly concerned with bettering themselves.”

I have seen folks like this who’ve never touched a drink or cannabis ever in their lives. That aside, who are you to decide if someone should be “bettering themselves?” This is nanny-state talk. Very progressive, immoral & anti-liberty. More “I know better than you do” is NOT conservative in any way.

Bad parents usually do bad job of raising kids. Bad parents can be cannabis users, beer drinkers, thieves & smell bad too. Still, the fact remains, prohibition has created more crime & cost society more than any minute amount it might have prevented.

Of course we all know the WOD did absolutely nothing but increase the cost, size and scope of government in every direction.

It also increased the wealth, size and scope of drug cartels ... so there is that too.

Even on FR, if you say that the US is becoming nothing but a bunch of ignorant potheads you get pummeled by the “potheads”

Remember, as Fat Freddie said, "Dope will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no dope."

Republican support for legal marijuana hits a new high (45%-42%)

July 21, 2016

For the first time Republicans narrowly support legalizing marijuana

YouGov's latest research shows that most Americans still support legalization of marijuana, and that support for legalization has increased slightly, from 52% in December 2015 to 55% today. Most of this change is a result of changing attitudes among Republicans. In fact, for the first time, Republicans narrowly tend to support legalization, 45% to 42%.

You missed my point. Those who will not better themselves tend to become the tax-payer’s responsibility. Now, if we could just leave them to starve, I’d be fine with it. But our system is moving more to the left all the time, and the more people just sit back and chill, the more we have to pay for them. And you just ignored what I said about young kids getting onto pot because their parents do it. I’m telling you as someone who has had 2000 students: they become society’s problem very quickly.

I am very familiar with the pot industry in Colorado particularly at the top end

More so than anyone on this forum I’d wager

And I have not observed any of your allegations except one

I agree legal weed has increased Denvers transient population since it’s basically the nations pot tourism Mecca

Denver has also had an influx of less well off than usual hipsters

The low rent ones basically

But on the other hand it’s a demographic issue

I’ve sat in pot shops in Aspen all day and the customer base was rich Aspen

Whereas go to Edgewater in Denver which is open quite late more than others and it’s a scrubbier crowd

Compare a liquor store in Belle Meade where I used to live with so Bordeaux which is black and sketchier

I’m ambivalent on full rec weed

I think the medical card approach is preferable

For the record

But these states aren’t gonna quit on that revenue now
