That will make licensed journalists as honest as licensed lawyers and as competent as licensed teachers.

Some “journalist” deserve a scratchy rope for blatant lies, others should be jailed, and others banned. Fabrications are unacceptable by people calling themselves journalists.

I would just go with a fairness doctrine. If you are opinion based, you have to state it in your article or show. If you lie about it, both you and the station are heavily fined. Finally, if you are government, you cannot have a relative in the media and vice versa. When you leave media or government, you cannot move to the other industry for 5 years.
I don’t watch tv. (PBS rarely) Husband takes a couple of
local newspapers & one from the “old hometown” that we’ve
been away from for the most part for over 50 yrs. - I don’t
even recognize most of the names in the papers as we live
way out of town. Newspapers don’t seem to realize that many
of their readers are NOT Democrats. If it were up to me,
the subscriptions would be dropped.
