Comparison Obsession
August 19, 2016
Dont I have the right to do what I want with my own money? Or are you envious because I am generous?
Matthew 20:15
Thomas J. DeLong, a professor at Harvard Business School, has noted a disturbing trend among his students and colleaguesa comparison obsession." He writes: More so than ever before, . . . business executives, Wall Street analysts, lawyers, doctors, and other professionals are obsessed with comparing their own achievements against those of others. . . . This is bad for individuals and bad for companies. When you define success based on external rather than internal criteria, you diminish your satisfaction and commitment.
Comparison obsession isnt new. The Scriptures warn us of the dangers of comparing ourselves to others. When we do so, we become proud and look down on them (Luke 18:914). Or we become jealous and want to be like them or have what they have (James 4:1). We fail to focus on what God has given us to do. Jesus intimated that comparison obsession comes from believing that God is unfair and that He doesnt have a right to be more generous to others than He is to us (Matt. 20:116).
By Gods grace we can learn to overcome comparison obsession by focusing on the life God has given to us. As we take moments to thank God for everyday blessings, we change our thinking and begin to believe deep down that God is good.
I need a better focus, Lord. Help me to keep my eyes off others and instead on You and Your good heart for all of us.
God expresses His goodness to His children in His own way.
Jesus taught the parable of the workers in the vineyard (Matt. 20:116) to show His disciples the generous heart of God. God is not unjust. He has no favorites and treats every Christian generously and equally (vv. 1315). Paul later taught this same truth: There is no favoritism with [God] (Eph. 6:9; Col. 3:25). This extends to believers and the way we view others (1 Tim. 5:21).

Forgot to include the lyrics to:
Pass the Biscuits, Miranda
In the hills of Tennessee sittin’ neath a hickory tree,
There’s an ornery rifle shootin’ mountaineer.
He loves mountain feuds and he also loves good food
And when he goes home to supper you will hear.
cho: Oh pass the biscuits Miranda,
I’m just as hungry as sin.
Oh pass the Gravy Miranda,
I need some stuff to sop em in.
Since nine o’clock I’ve been sittin on a rock,
A shoot’n every thing in sight.
I shot the boys and a dozen Barton boys
A-shoot’n gives a man an appetite,
Oh pass the biscuits Miranda,
Pass em and kiss me goodbye
They’re so heavy Miranda,
I feel that I’m a-gonna die.
Then he heard a rifle crack and a bullet hit the shack
And another broke the dishes on the shelf.
So he grabbed his trusty gun, cause the battle had begun
And he knew that he must then protect himself.
Oh pass the biscuits Miranda,
I’m a-gonna load up my gun
I’ll use your biscuits for bullets,
I’ll put them varmints on the run.
He poured a ton of black powder in his gun,
Rammed the biscuits into place.
He took good aim, Oh my goodness what a shame,
Bang! the gun exploded in his face!
Oh darn your biscuits Miranda,
I know that I’m gonna die
Oh darn your biscuits Miranda,
I knew your cookin’ would kill me bye and bye.
The song was written and performed by Spike Jones and his City Slickers:
