This belongs in the you-cant-make-up-this-stuff category:
In Florida (you knew it was Florida, didnt you?), some third-graders including honor students are being forced to retake third grade because their parents decided to opt them out of the states mandated standardized reading test this past spring.
An undetermined number of third-graders who refused to take the Florida Standards Assessment in reading have been barred from moving to fourth grade in some counties. A lawsuit filed by parents against state education officials as well as school boards in seven Florida counties says counties are interpreting the states third-grade retention law so differently that the process has become unfair. Test participation, therefore, is more important than student class academic achievement.

School at home.
This policy is ridiculous, but standardized tests have their role. Without them, every parent is told their children are geniuses by teachers with a vested interest in promulgating the lie; standardized tests let parents sift through the BS and see how their children really stack up.
When you work with ‘hoodrats with COLLEGE DEGREES that are functional illiterates, you’ll understand the appeal of a test that would stop that charade in its tracks...
When will people ever learn to homeschool or send their kids to a private school? Government-run indoctrination centers are a failure to everyone.
We also need good, conservative American patriots to run for their local school boards to fight this garbage at the ground level
Which is why inner-city teachers and administrators have repeatedly been caught helping kids cheat the tests.
“standardized tests have their role”
Achievement is important, but so is testing. Without measurement, there is no achievement.
It is a good thing these special snowflakes don’t go to private schools, they would implode when they find out they have to be tested weekly!
...and they win $10 million in punitive damages, but their kids still have to repeat the third grade.....
Exactly - but they’re only prosecuted if the cheating lined their own pockets (performance bonuses and such). The worst part is that employers have to pretend those fake diplomas and degrees are comparable to those earned by real students; it created a legal minefield...
I do think that in some instances states are forcing testing on homeschool parents.
What I find particularly disgusting is that teachers aren't UP IN ARMS opposed to Common Core and mandated testing. Originally, tests were sold as nothing more than basic skills tests, not the monster they've become.
“Honor Roll” in the third grade?

Private schools had been the gold standard in my area for years, but now are so desperate they’ll take anyone who can pay. Often they are used just for the physical safety they afford students (compared to the public school alternative).
We’ve also lost a lot of private schools as the economy continues to tank, primarily Catholic schools.
Kids work all year, get good grades and because they don't take a stupid test at the end of the year, they're held back?
That's like telling a PGA tour pro that because you didn't win the Tour Championship final tournament, you have to give the money you've won during the year, back.
I wish my teachers hadn't done that. They blew my "I can't understand" excuse for not doing homework right out the window.
Assuming there is sanity behind the standardized testing.
In general, home schooling, which doesn’t need to use many standards beyond which the parents choose, has been shown to lead to objectively better results in earthly competition. There are a number of variables in this picture.
I’m not yet 50, but fortunately was educated before social promotion - by educated teachers who would fail and hold back students who hadn’t mastered certain objectives by year-end.
Sadly, those days are gone; the only requirement for high school diploma is attendance...
What a stupid way to judge what a child knows, Jebby! Lots of children are terrible test takers. They get so anxious that they don't score anywhere near their ability. Day to day performance is a much better indicator.
Leave it to the Jebster to be a part of the exact wrong thing.
It seems very popular to call anyone who complains in a way you don’t like a snowflake, but we have not looked at what OTHER kind of testing happens in the schools.
Even without sanity (which would definitely be preferable), ANY standardized tests let parents compare the performance of their child with the performance of other students across the nation. If children in my town score an average of 30/100 on ANY test, while children in neighboring areas (or even states) are scoring 60/100, then the lies are exposed.
No, there can be politically correct testing, especially in areas like social studies. What value does a standard of a twisted ruler serve?
