House Speaker Paul Ryan wins primary, defeats longshot GOP challenger praised by Donald Trump.
Ryan was being challenged by Paul Nehlen.
Nehlen had been courting Trump supporters and won praise from the Republican presidential nominee last week. But Trump endorsed Ryan days later.
Ryan had largely ignored Nehlen in what had been a sleepy primary before Trump thanked Nehlen on Twitter for his comments defending Trump. Nehlen won the backing of some prominent conservative figures, including former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, but it wasn't enough to overcome Ryan's popularity in his southeastern Wisconsin district.
Ryan was first elected in 1998 and this is his first re-election win since becoming speaker last fall.
There wasn’t a chance in hell that Ryan could be defeated....none, nada, nil, zilch!!!!
They brought us total war.
Not in the Primary. But in the General? That's a whole other kettle of fish, especially since he's pissed off a lot of Trump supporters in Wisconsin.
The voters in Ryan's district had the opportunity to elect a good perosn. They chose instead someone who hates this country.
Wisconsin utilizes an open primary system.
Registered voters do not need to be a member of the party
whose primary they wish to vote in.
I don't think that he even has a Democrat opponent, no one is attempting political suicide.
Well that is a total disappointment...Thanks Wisconsin, you can exile yourselves to Canada since your no good to America now...damn traitors!!!
Some nitwits say really stupid things on this site...you for example.
fair
Chicago doesn't even know what a Republican is....
A tad on the juvenile side wouldn't you say???
and as for scripture, you must be a protestant, making it up as you desire.
Re: “But were the Polls wrong or right on this one?”
I saw a Ryan poll yesterday that had him at 80%.
Slightly off topic...
A lot of people at Free Republic were happy when Kansas Republican Congressman Tim Huelskamp lost his primary.
Huelskamp was anti-Trump.
What’s the bad news?
Huelskamp was also a hard core opponent of Open Borders and Amnesty.
He also opposed many of the farm subsidies supported by the GOP.
Paul Ryan was so enraged at Huelskamp he threw him off the Agriculture Committee.
Bottom Line - Ryan gets 85%, and Huelskamp gets beat.
New Congress in 2017 - NEW SPEAKER.
It will probably be Nancy Pelosi. But then again, for all intents and purposes she has been the Speaker.
LOL
Who care if he had “issues” if he’s elected he’s a freshman congresscritter. Can’t really do that much damage, whereas the weasel he was running against is actively trying to destroy the country.
Paul Ryan was so enraged at Huelskamp he threw him off the Agriculture Committee.
Nope. Boehner threw Cruz Jr. off the Ag Committee. Ryan reneged on a promise to put him back on it. What a soap opera. LOL
