How to Hack an Election in 7 Minutes
politico ^ | August 05, 2016 | Ben Wofford

Electronic voting machines—particularly a design called Direct Recording Electronic, or DRE’s—took off in 2002, in the wake of Bush v. Gore. For the ensuing 15 years, Appel and his colleagues have deployed every manner of stunt to convince the public that the system is pervasively unsecure and vulnerable.

Joseph Stalin: It is not the votes that count, it is the one who counts the votes.

Does someone want to try to persuade me that the richest country in the history of earth, with the greatest technology known to mankind, not know how to count and store physical paper ballots for an election?

i think we know the answer as to why we would not do that.

Pretty good article, but I stopped reading at “No county clerk anywhere in the United States has the ability to defend themselves against advanced persistent threats.” My county clerk is still using paper “bubble ballots” (fill in the oval/scantron type). Writers should skip the sensational quotes...but that doesn’t sell magazines or websites I guess.

Not that this is nonsense, but rather that it is of great concern now because of "Russian" hackers. This is how Obama won the 2012 election.

They are preparing to call foul when Donald Trump thumps Hillary, even after setting up the machines to cheat for Hillary.

Yet when I asked her about Appel’s hack and the Princeton group, next door across the Delaware River, she appeared not to have heard of it. She assured me their system is secure...

The nice salesman assured her that it was secure!

Just so patriots know, the Founding States had never intended for POTUS to be elected by ordinary voters, but by electors appointed by state legislatures. Not only did this mean that there were actually far fewer votes to count, but the vice president, with federal lawmakers as witnesses, was expected to count the votes.

This is all explained in Clause 2 of Section 1 of Article II and the 12th Amendment (12A). (The language in 12A is a bit ambiguous so corrections, insights welcome.)

My question is this: If the bad guys can set up a system that can be manipulated, why can’t the good guys defeat the system the bad guys set up with an alternate manipulated system? Freeper DeLong’s post poses the same scenario. So, why can’t the good guys beat the bad guys at their own game?

I suppose we could, we are just not inclined to operate that way I venture is why we don’t.

It’s amazing how reporters look for the ants and miss the elephants.

The elephant to U.S. National election security is the main tabulation computers, at the election hqtrs for each state, that all of these e-voting machines report their data to.

Sure, you can hack a machine here and there, but why go through this work on thousands of machines in precincts in a state when you can invisibly cheat with the main tabulation computer.

No hacking. Just bribe a consultant that sets up the incoming vote information from the thousands of machines.

The cheat ratio can be pre-set within the GEMS (Global Election Management System) software to have the rigged results before the election. It ratio’s the incoming votes to floating point numbers (fractional from 0.001 vote per person to 25.0 votes per person) to match the set candidate win point spread.

GEMS has been turned into a cheater’s paradise, up for the highest bidder. It is illegal what was done within the software, in the name of having a new feature to do “weighted” voting for analysis purposes only (all normal elections must be “one person one vote”). Since this change from an integer counting parameter to a floating point number parameter (within GEMS), cheating has already been done. See the article below.

This article was written with a “hot button” angle targeting the black vote, but any race, demographic, party, etc. can have their vote count manipulated.

Yes, paper ballots will hold the real audit-able results, but someone has to catch the GEMS system cheating the vote total when compared to an audit from counting the paper ballots. This is what was proven in this article (how it was caught).

So the administration is blowing smoke in focusing on “outside sources”, when the administration must know about the GEMS system (many political people do as the e-vote programming consultants are constantly asked to ‘rig’ the outcomes & how much it will cost).

I can’t disagree, because what you have posted is the reality of what we face. We, the good guys, don’t cheat. But thus far, neither have the good guys been able to stop the cheating. Check out post #10. If someone wants to cheat, it is laid out extensively how it can be done. And anytime the Democrats are involved, it will absolutely be done.

....paper ballots with carbon copied reciepts by county per state. Any questionable tally could easily be checked for who voted for who....IF THE LAST 8 YEARS HAVEN’T SHOWN YOU WHAT CAN HAPPEN TO THE “ will of the people”.....
No to voter photo ID

There is no way to be sure that your good guys will remain one step ahead of your bad guys. What is secure this week may not be secure next week, after one of the bad guys dreams up a new hack.

The best you can do is to recognize that high-tech computer solutions are inherently insecure. Go low-tech. It is very hard to hack a well designed paper ballot.

Simple....

Good guys do not break the law.

Bad guys have no compunction about breaking the law.

And close the electoral rolls to new registrations a month before the election. No voting while unregistered, no registrations on the day, no “I forgot”s, excuses, whining, etc.

We do, and we did. One problem is that everyone (including us) insists on knowing the results 30 seconds after the the polls close.

In American politics, an onlooker might observe that hacking an election has been less of a threat than a tradition. Ballot stuffing famously plagued statewide and some federal elections well into the 20th century. Huey Long was famously caught rigging the vote in 1932. Sixteen years later, 1948 saw the infamous "Lyndon Landslide," in which Johnson mysteriously overcame a 20,000 vote deficit in his first Senate race, a miracle that Robert Caro reports was the almost certain result of vote rigging.

So when Trump says the election might be rigged, obviously he is a conspiracy nut.

Back in the day, universal suffrage was viewed as a danger. Today, all communist countries tout universal suffrage as the ideal to be met.

That's my sentiment as well. It is also necessary to secure the access to a ballot. "Dead people voting" is joked about, but is a real effect used to stuff ballot boxes.
