Donald Trump says he ‘always wanted to get the Purple Heart’
Washington Post ^ | 8/2/2016 | Philip Bump

The most potent moment of the Democratic convention last week was when Khizr Khan, father of an Army captain killed in Iraq in 2004, challenged Donald Trump's proposal to ban Muslims from entering the United States. "You have sacrificed nothing and no one," Khan said to Trump, holding aloft a copy of the Constitution that he suggested Trump read.

Trump's immediate response was to criticize Khan and his wife, earning a number of rebukes from veterans and members of his own party. "There are certain sacrosanct subjects that no amount of wordsmithing can repair once crossed," said a statement from the head of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

At a campaign event in Virginia on Tuesday, Trump tried to mend any damage he'd done with members of the military in an unusual way: He accepted a Purple Heart from a veteran in the audience.

"Something very nice just happened to me. A man came up to me and he handed me his Purple Heart," Trump said. "I said to him, is that the real one, or is that a copy? He said, 'That's my real Purple Heart. I have such confidence in you.' And I said, 'Man, that's big stuff.'"

"I always wanted to get the Purple Heart," Trump continued. "This was much easier."

The Purple Heart is given to those serving in the armed forces who are wounded in combat. Trump never served in the military, though he once said that he "always felt that I was in the military" because he went to military school. He was old enough to have been drafted during the Vietnam War, but received five deferments. Four of them were because he was still in school; the fifth was medical. Trump, his doctor said, had bone spurs on his heels.

“No one wants to get a Purple Heart.”

No joke. I’d be happy to trade my PH for non-scarred skin on my chest and back and forgetting what debridement felt like.

Purple Hearts aren’t given for bravery. They are given to the unlucky ones who were unlucky enough to be killed or injured in combat.

In WWII a lot of combat veterans referred to their "unlucky" wounds as "Million Dollar" wounds.

I guess you had to be there.

Kerry got three of them for two ouchies and a booboo. By regulation your wounds must have been caused by enemy action and must have required the attendance of a physician. As I recollect, at least one of Kerry’s “wounds” was a minor splinter when a fragment of a grenade that he fired lodged in his arm. A corpse man ;) dug it out and put a Bandaid on it.

First of all, I don’t think he should have accepted it. I know it’s an incredible gesture and honor, but that man earned it, and I’d tell him he earned it. If he has children or a loved one, he can then pass it on when he dies. I can also understand the flip side that the man offered something incredibly precious to him, and he felt that it would be wrong to turn away this man’s gift. It’s just something that I wouldn’t be able to take because this man earned it and bled for it, and there can’t be a more precious object in the world to him.

Second of all, like you said, no one wants to get a Purple Heart. It means you got hurt in combat. It was definitely a poorly worded statement.

The media will of course play this up and use it to talk about his deferments. There is certainly no proof Trump illegally dodged Vietnam, but they sure as heck are looking as some articles on that have popped up recently.

Trump has got to be careful because this is about the worst I have ever seen media bias since the media fawning all over Obama in 2008.

-- Yes, if Trump leaves it alone. --

He's never brought it up on his own. Not even in the first place.

“FU!!!! It is the media who is at fault not Trump.”

FU...I don’t know what that means, could you spell it out for me! And if you don’t think Trump’s words about Mrs. Khan were a mistake:

Christie calls Trump criticism of the Khans ‘inappropriate’
http://www.politico.com/states/new-jersey/story/2016/08/christie-criticism-of-the-khans-inappropriate-104426#ixzz4GCSe7aIc

And the Purple Heart:

“Trump’s comments come as his military deferments during the Vietnam War’s military draft have been scrutinized following his criticism of the family of Humayun Khan, a Muslim US soldier who was killed in the Iraq War”
