Trump says he may let Russia keep Crimea
CBS ^ | July 31, 2016 | Emily Schultheis

Donald Trump has come under fire for his praise of Russian President Vladimir Putin and his ties to the country--and he suggested Sunday that he might recognize Russia's control of Crimea.

"You know, the people of Crimea, from what I've heard, would rather be with Russia than where they were," he said on ABC's "This Week." "And you have to look at that, also. Now, that was under -- just so you understand, that was done under Obama's administration. ... Crimea has been taken. Don't blame Donald Trump for that."

Trump made those comments just after saying Putin is "not going into Ukraine."

"Well, look, you know, I have my own ideas. He's not going into Ukraine, OK?" Trump said of Putin. "Just so you understand. He's not going to go into Ukraine, all right? You can mark it down and you can put it down, you can take it anywhere you want."

True of the American West too, but we ain’t giving it back either.

History ain’t always pretty, but the Russians have claimed Crimea (annexed 1783) for longer than we’ve claimed California (annexed 1847).

The neocon clowns that plotted with neo-nazis to overthrow Ukraine’s government in favor of hand picked stooges can tantrum all they want, the Russians own Crimea and aren’t giving it away.

We are talking about deportation and mass murder in our lifetime. Given Putin’s threats and mass murder there is a strong case to be made for deporting all ethnic Russians from former Soviet states back to Russia. They simply are not worth the potential problems with a malignant force like Putinist Russia making threats.

Obama is letting them keep it.

By saying he is 'letting' them keep it pre-supposes there is something he could do to stop it. What EXACTLY do you think he could do to stop it?

Are you seeking war with Russia?

Land war in Asia is a fool's errand...

Just deport the ethnic Russians back home. Turnabout is fair play.

Considering how many centuries the Crimea was Russian before the Communists handed it to the Ukraine in 1954 (without getting the consent of the populace), what you wrote sounds about as reasonable as saying all white Americans should just go "home" to Europe.

I sure as hell don’t want any Americans dying for Crimea.

And just what is Hillary gonna do—screech until Putin hands it over?

And what is she going to do to free Ukraine?

Madness.

No, we are not.

link

90 year ago there were TWICE as many Russians as Tatars in Crimea, and the Ukrainian population has always been smaller than the Russian.

It's Russian. Sorry. It was that way long before you were born. Long before Americans decided to conquer the West and carry out the necessary deportations and mass murder to effect that conquest. History is sometimes brutal, but it is important to remember it is also real.

“Putin is an alpha male, same as Trump, they both have good heads on their shoulders, Putin has protected his people and country, the same as Trump wants to do with America and her people...”

Putin is a midget with Napoleon complex. He is bending backwards to hegemonic China while piling on docile Eastern Europeans. Russian eastern half will be Chinese, the southern region will be carved up by Islamic Iran or Sunni Caucasians, so good luck. Good luck with the Chinese and Iranian appeasement policies. If that is what you call “protection”, be my guest.

Thank you. I appreciate that.

I was mistaken in thinking your response was inferring Trump would be not better, a negative.

I appreciate you making it clear that was not the case.

Just remember the old Russian proverb: “Russia is never as strong as she looks; Russia is never as weak as she looks.”

Putin-ist Russia will be around a long, long time.

“Has our media impartially investigated the will of the majority of Crimeans - who have historic ties to Russia and were badly treated by Ukrainians?”

The Russian commies killed millions of Ukrainians. Keep supporting them.

Putin is much more vulnerable than most people think. He doesn’t have the firm grip that Stalin had in his day. But there’s no guarantee that if he were somehow deposed, his replacement wouldn’t be even worse.

Ukrainians also killed thousands of Poles. No saints in that part of the world.

I am relieved that we finally have a leader of the Republican party with some common sense. The Crimea isn’t actually Ukrainian, and I’m frankly surprised that the Russians didn’t demand it’s return in 1991 (perhaps they didn’t want to give Germany a precedent for requesting the return of Kaliningrad/Königsberg or they were simply too weak at the time). There is no way we should ever risk a major war with a nuclear power in order to take away the democratic rights of people trying to guide their futures in a way that’s more in keeping with their history and heritage. Trump knows which battles are worth marking a red line in the sand over—and then actually enforcing that red line. Crimea isn’t it.

On the other hand, the press is going nuts about any mention of Russia that isn’t mouth foaming, bulging eyed warmongering, so it might be better if Trump avoids saying too much on the subject for a while. We need to be on good terms with a huge nuclear power like Russia, even when someone like Putin leads it, but the press is trying to make it look like Trump and Putin are colluding with each other (without proof naturally).
