According to
another S. Korean news report, the general in question was in charge of collecting money earned from N. Korean restaurants and construction works in South East Asia and Southern China, and sending it to Office No. 39 of N. Korea's ruling party, which manages Kim Jong-un's slush fund. It said that, when he escaped, he took $40 million with him.

This general is a big fish unlike restaurant attendants or high school math prodigy who defected earlier. It is more politically sensitive. So it is not clear if Chinese will let him go as in earlier cases. It all depends on China whether he makes it out to another country or is sent back to N. Korea.

How does one take $40M with them?

Those are executed for the earlier defection of 13 N. Korean restaurant workers in China. With this new incident, there will be more executions, and elites in Pyongyang will be further rattled.

Probably he stashed away in some secure bank accounts which only he can have access to.

Like Norton did on the Honeymoonres. You cut up fake money to make sure it fits into the suitcase before you take it :)

I think if he has 40 million with him, China will be more than happy to take him. If we had a leader who was strong, this general would be on a first class flight to DC to be debriefed, given a new identity and citizenship in any western country he chooses.

It’s beginning to sound like the rats are really beginning to abandon a sinking ship. I wonder what shape this summer’s crops are in for next winter’s hungry time?

do you think there is a link to these articles?
maybe the general had some financial interest in a restaurant on the border.
the news coming out of NK can be sketchy w/details & you never get the full story.

$40M equals about 80% of North Korea’s GDP!!

Something I’ve never understood about NK is its obvious dependency on Communist China. Let’s call it that. In all these years I’ve never heard of anyone making it from NK to China, that is is Communist China, but here we are now. I think this is something new. It’s going to be a challenge for the President of the United States, Barack Obama, to make it disappear.

“$40 Million = 80% of NK GDP!” That should be sad, but it’s funny. Kim Jun Un, like most fascists, is not a good manager.
See Venezuela and Zimbabwe for other examples. Extreme inflation, Currency that resembles Play Money, the vast majority of citizens long term unemployed and ultimately unemployable.
