Air conditioners and refrigerators pose as big a threat to "life on the planet" as the threat of terrorism, Secretary of State John Kerry said Friday.
Kerry was in Vienna negotiating a global climate deal to phase out chemicals used as refrigerants in basic household and commercial appliances such as air conditioning and refrigerators, called hydrofluorocarbons, or HFCs. The chemicals are a potent source of greenhouse gas emissions that many scientists blame for contributing to global warming.
Kerry made the remarks as part of a pep talk for negotiators working through the weekend to amend a 1987 treaty called the Montreal Protocol to deal with the chemicals.

Where do we find buffoons like this?
I’m thinking his little presentation was made in....wait for it....wait for it....wait for it...
AN AIR CONDITIONED ROOM!

**as big a threat to “life on the planet” as the threat of terrorism**
So why aren’t we doing more about terrorists?
OK, I can sort of rationalize that a person, delusional from lack of common human good sense, may wander into a fever swamp by accident, but to remain there year after year, and to believe this is the “new normal”, is to boggle the mind.
Ammonia makes a most excellent refrigerant in a closed system, but it has one serious shortcoming - nobody has ever attempted to take a second breath of ammonia, even in very dilute quantities. And systems leak, regardless of how well they may have been originally engineered. The hydrofluorocarbon gases were developed as a much safer and more controllable substitute for ammonia, and over the years, have proved to do a very efficient job to separating fluid streams into very different temperature strata.
But of course, over time, these gases leak out into the atmosphere. The original formulations were somewhat more toxic, and were replaced, over time, with somewhat safer and even more efficient substitutes, and today a relatively safe standard exists for most refrigerator and air conditioning systems, including those on automobiles.
If there were a complete disregard for safety standards, then propane makes an even more efficient refrigerant, but much more than even ammonia, a propane leak is REALLY hazardous, as propane is highly combustible, while ammonia would only sear your lungs.
Thanks for the explanation, you made it easy to understand refrigerant and it’s properties. I’m a science dummy.
Oh my gosh. Kerry would have a stroke if he knew I had TWO refrigerators....one in the kitchen and one in the garage. And yep both are on 24/7. I also have AC....so I am a sinner to Kerry.
How soon before we become refrigerant criminals?
Sinner? Try terrorist. You are just as bad and just as big of a threat. His own words.
One day if they are allowed to stay in power they will use swat to raid people like you.
What a complete ass this man is.
Sinner? Try terrorist.
Oh yeah you are right and you are right about swat raiding my house....the way we are going, I could see that sooner rather then later. Our country has never been in a more dangerous situation as the 2016 election.
Angela Merkel has her hands full of Islamic freon as we speak...
Sooner then later. And one of our brilliant FRiends reminded me that Kerry believes I am a terrorist and not a sinner.....so true.
You know, if all these wackos got their way I’d love to see modern man in a hundred years or so. Probably living in a cave starving because it’d be illegal to kill anything for food.
I cannot stand the stupidity that is now running the country.
I CANNOT STAND IT ANYMORE!
They have increased the cost for older home owners and are driving some repair people out of business, according to local sources.
Kerry and Clineon--living high on the hog. Ordinary citizens--sweating their way through the summer, or going back to window units, while their friends in the business are losing their business.
