Word is that Hillary Clinton will announce her vice presidential choice on Friday, and rumors that she’s going with a “safe” pick should worry Democrats. In this political climate, a search for “safety” could put her candidacy in serious danger.
Change vs. the status quo.
The GOP chose Mike Pence in part because his extremist views will reassure the Republican base. Pence is also an seasoned politician whose nomination is meant to reassure voters who worry that Trump has no experience in statecraft or governance.
(Note to readers: Yes, I just used the words “Trump” and “statecraft” in the same sentence. It feels as strange to me as it does to you.)
Clinton’s needs are different. She has to energize and excite the Democratic base, along with millions of millennials who have never voted. She needs to bring excitement, and a sense of the new, to a campaign conspicuously lacking in those qualities.
Voters remain deeply dissatisfied with the status quo. Clinton’s biggest problem, and the greatest threat to her candidacy, is the fact that she’s seen as the candidate of the status quo.

“Extremist views”? Formerly known as accepted wisdom of the vast majority of middle class working men and women. Keeping the doors locked (i.e. the border), paying your bills (i.e. not balooning the deficit), protecting your family from dangerous animals (i.e. law and order and sane foreign policy), and protecting the innocence of children (i.e. opposition to perversion in the schools and - sadly - even bathrooms), is now considered extreme. What a sad indictment of our society.
Kaine is pretty far left.
All Clinton needs are the urban precinct captains. They’ll deliver the votes for her.
I don't think there are even many democrats who feel they could survive four years near her? Her record is lethal at best.

She is hemmed in. She can no longer use triangulation as she and her husband have their entire careers. The party has moved too far Left and their base will not allow it.
Bold and left, maybe. Mostly she has to pick an accomplice who will embrace her corruption and help her amass billions through sales of everything in national security not nailed down. For example, she needs to pick someone who can be issued a security clearance to provide her with proxy access to the information so necessary to clinton’s personal enrichment; this just in the event clinton doesn’t get a clearance.
She's not SEEN as the candidate of the status quo, she IS the candidate of the status quo. The same policies that have caused a majority of Americans to say that America is on the wrong course.
