The police shooting of an African-American caregiver, who was lying in the street trying to help an autism patient, was accidental, according to the local police union representing the North Miami officer.
The officer had intended to shoot the patient, whom he thought posed a danger, but accidentally shot the caregiver instead, said John Rivera, the President of the Dade County Police Benevolent Association.

The toy truck was an AKenworth-47.
Oh, that procedure is in place already?
We don't need nation-wide protests and calls to action to make that happen?
Looks like this situation is under control.
Exactly why would he have to shoot ANY UNARMED person?
Yeah, like that's going to help.
“1. They keep saying black man shot overshadowing the fact that it was in the leg.”
That’s what the media does to promote their agenda.
They will go out of their way to convince people that being shot in the leg, is really like being actually shot.
It wasn’t a felony stop so the police had no reason to even have their guns drawn. This is liability all the way down. Qualified immunity does not apply.
I watched this video and it may be the most idiotic thing I have ever seen.
I am not sure even the Gestapo would have shot either one of them.
No reason to even have more than one cop and even then, to just introduce himself and ask if anything is wrong.
As the father of an autistic child, I find this just as much disturbing as the original story.
Why was he pointing his weapon at him??
I guy on the ground with his hands in the air and a retarded man playing with a truck are a cause for caution, but not drawing and aiming a weapon.
Well, sh!t happens.
Then they accidentally handcuffed him
Well then, that explains it. Was the dump part pointing at the cop?
Hard to picture a person sitting down playing with a truck as a threat to anyone. This cop needs to move to a different profession. We know he won't see any prison time because he's a cop and just shot a citizen, but the least that needs to happen is he needs to lose his job.
Pure BS!
They did not LATER learn the other man was Autistic. The therapist repeated that over and over during the standoff.
Pure bullcrap.
As a strong supporter of police, it just makes me FURIOUS they ALWAYS try to protect bad cops. Right, he ACCITENTALLY shotbthe wrong guy he wascaiming for!
Nothing ever on eart will ever justify the evil assassinations of police just doing their job, most of whom are good and competent, but it is easy to understand how black racist anti-cop groups can be inflamed by BS like this.
Say it you assholes. Say, we are investigating but it appears we have an officer who could not handle a simple situation and if so, we are going to punish him. We know we will get sued and in this case frankly, we deserve it.
Same old stinking blue line of defense.
Didnt know man was autistic. BULLCRAP.
Shot black guy but meant to shoot peaceful white guy sittingb10 feet away. BULLFINGCRAP.
Had he shot the white guy in that event, I would be calling for his head anyway! That cop needs to be fired and convicted of a misdemeanor, at best. He has no business carrying a weapon.NONE!
Just when you want to love cops again and they have your heartfelt sympathy, they pull some asinine stunt like this, sayig he was aiming at a white guy he didnt know was autistic, but accidently shot the black man multiple times.
Stupid MFers!
Nope.
Some fat guy sitting on the ground playing with a toy truck can only look like a threat to someone whose primary purpose is to find someone they can shoot.
The made up defense is worse than what happened.
Put the cop on the felons incarcerated in the state penitentiary list.
Yep, you disproved that lie in 10 words.
The cop needs to be fired. The mayor needs to read zrivera the root act for lying And call for his immediate replacement.
These assholes never learn.
Oh come on, he was trying to shoot the toy truck out of his hands. A few tries more and maybe he would have. Darn caregiver spoiled all the fun.
Seriously, no cop should take a shot if innocents are nearby. There were plenty of other cops with a clear view to take a shot if necessary. The offending cop should be fired and brought up on charges.
Cop needs to go to jail.
Sorry, but poor trigger control when pointing a weapon at someone is gross negligence.
Did you watch the video? If not, watch it and then respond. I think George Zimmerman comparison is way off in this situation.
The caregiver - who was shot - did not feel threatened by his patient at all. He did everything right and still got shot!
