A MAN is in custody after he set himself alight and drove a vehicle filled with gas bottles into a Western Sydney police station underground carpark, in what is suspected to be an attempted terror attack.
It is understood the bottles did not detonate when the car rammed into the gates of Merrylands police station carpark about 7pm tonight.
The driver was not arrested until about 8pm, after police closed off Memorial Ave, and he was taken to Westmead Hospital to be treated for minor burns.

Merrylands is quite near Parramatta - just over a year ago, a young man shouting Islamic slogans shot and killed a police employee at Parramatta Police Station.
Technology has always been their Acheilies heel. Thank God.

i guess Democrats made the bombs.
Surely you jest. No one in Australia has guns. Hillary and Barack assured us that the Australian method of gun control has brought complete safety.
Please can we not have yet another thread derailed by the gun issue. Guns are not banned in Australia. I own several myself. A lot of misinformation is spread in the US about Australian gun laws (which do have more than their share of pointless stupidity) by all sorts of people.
So far, police seem to be taking the ‘history of mental illness with no known links to terror groups line’ (which could be true but this happened only three hours ago and he’s only been in custody two hours so even if he’s known to them, they haven’t had much chance to find out anything new). Expected to be a statement from a senior officer shortly (probably the state police Assistant Commissioner) but I doubt they’ll be saying much more yet. Real facts might start emerging tomorrow.
I’ll bet the perp is a muslim.
Is this not the same tactic that was used in Scotland some years ago? Thank God there was no detonation.
Yes - Glasgow Airport 2007 - on the face of it does look somewhat similar but we don’t have many details yet
BTT keeping track. Let us know when more info surfaces.

OooooohWeeee!!! Those fun-loving, peaceful moozlums.
It’s nearly 11pm here, so I doubt much more will become known until sometime tomorrow - police will, of course, investigate overnight but I doubt they will brief the press until tomorrow again.
So far we have seen a brief press conference with a senior police officer who has said that they are still trying to definitively identify the perpetrator - the impression was they have identified him from the car registration but are trying to get a more formal identification. He is a serious condition in hospital with severe burns. They do not know his motivations yet but are keeping an open mind about the possibility of terrorist connections. He was parked in the driveway of the police station - when police approached to question him, he set the interior of his car alight and attempted to ram his way into the underground carpark - fortunately that entrance had recently been fortified with a heavy metal gate and it prevented him gaining entrance. Police officers at risk to their own lives pulled him from his burning vehicle - I think that’s very important to note - the police risked their lives to save a man who showed every sign of wanting to try and kill them.
Couldn’t be a muzzard, could it?
It certainly could be - we have some extremists here and there have already been two serious attacks on police stations by Muslim extremists. But at this stage, it could also be a run of the mill nutter - Melbourne’s main police station was bombed about 30 years ago by armed robbers with a grudge - you can’t rule the normal crims out until you know what happened.
No description of the man, nor his name.
I wonder why?
He’s in custody so there’s no need for a description or identification to try and catch him. In that situation, local practice in Australia would normally be to not identify the person at least until they’ve been charged, and more than likely until they have faced court.
Gee, that's too bad.
Be hotter where he's going...
