Before Ted Cruz walked onto the convention stage in Cleveland, Donald Trump had a very good idea what was about to happen. Without pre-planning, or staged set-ups, Trump knew what to expect because Donald Trump has an exceptional political sense; he knows how to read his adversaries.
Throughout his life, Ted Cruz has exhibited a character of division; entirely tone-deaf to the people he encounters and leaves in his wake. Those who knew Cruz in grade school and college have talked about how Cruzs abrasive personality made him a lonely person despite his intellect.
Toxic abrasiveness is the same reason why President George W Bush would not elevate Ted Cruz in the White House 2001-2005. Attorney Cruz was 30-years-old and arrogantly thought he should have been a candidate for Attorney General; unfortunately, no-one else did.

This article expresses it exactly - hope Cruz reads it as he contemplates the bottle of pills by his coffee....like all the others who tried subterfuge to take down Trump, he has destroyed himself instead and left Trump in a more noble position for having tendered the olive branch.
As a bunch of people were calling out for Trump, Cruz said he appreciated the enthusiasm of the NY delegation. Most commenters here missed the point. Cruz was snarking the entire assembly. Lots of people were calling for Trump, not just New Yorkers. Cruz was using the New York values dog whistle against everyone else supporting Trump.
I will not be surprised if his wife leaves him once his political future self-destructs, and he is no longer an asset for Goldman Sachs.

Yes, I appreciate that you’re succinct!
It is impossible to predict what will happen with the Hillary or Trump presidencies but Trump gives conservatism some breathing room and Hillary would not. The government may continue to grow and erode freedom under Trump. Levin can sit around and I told you so. But his perfect candidate Cruz would have lost to Hillary. Either way Levin would have ended up in the wilderness.
The basic theory that Levin is using is that collapse leads to renewal. But Hillary won't collapse the country, she would turn it more towards green crony capitalism. The rest of us would get some trickle down. Trump will not collapse the country, he will cut corporate taxes and allow America to become great with all kinds of companies returning the favor. Either way Levin doesn't get the collapse he desires.
I disagree. Trump did not force Cruz onto the stage, nor is there any evidence Trump baited Cruz into a non-endorsement.
On the contrary, Trump gave Cruz the opportunity to get on board and set himself up for the next opportunity, be it a later presidential run or some appointment. Instead Cruz gave the world his own bitterness. Cruz set himself up. If he couldn’t control his pride and bitterness Cruz should have declined the invitation.
If Cruz is the standard for principled conservatives, it’s no wonder many Republicans have lost patience with principled conservatives.
If he wasn’t going to endorse Trump, he should have stayed away and kept his peace.
Even Jeb and the rest of the GOP establishment knew better than to poke the party in the eye.
Not endorsing Trump wouldn’t have hurt him but telling millions of Americans, I’ll vote for any one but my party’s nominee vastly diminished him.
What the hell was he thinking?

It was a win-win situation for Trump. If Cruz endorsed Trump, great. If Cruz didn’t endorse, it removes Cruz as a threat down the line as Cruz would’ve burned a YUGE bridge.
Also, something that’s been bumping around in my mind since Cruz’s speech last night...something that left a sour taste in my mouth over Cruz’s speech. I’ll cut and paste my comment from another thread...
“...Cruz stood on the body of a dead policeman just to violate his promise to endorse the Republican nominee.”
I, for one, had hopes initially that Trump and Cruz would partner up as in “Trump/Cruz 2016”, but that ship has sailed.
What are you talking about? You are truly demented.
If Ted thinks he has a strong shot in 2020, he should think again. Even a lot of Republicans who remain wary of Trump are disgusted by Cruz's backstabbing performance and hypocritical inability to reciprocate loyalty. Only a handful of his more robotic supporters will still be on Cruz's side.
“Hope Ted enjoyed his run, it will be his last.”.........
Betting on Cruz winning another campaign would be like betting on a three legged horse to win the Kentucky Derby.
I like Rush. I don't agree with everything he says but I agree with him more often than not.
I did not like his positions during the primary. But for the most part, Rush has a good show.
Rush is not anything like the Clintons. If he was, he would be praised by the media constantly. They would not organize boycotts against him or target his sponsors to force him off the air.
Nice graphic.
Donald graciously handed Ted a lifeline with which to save his career, then applauded as Ted proceeded to hang himself with it.
“I could just imagine Heidi and Ted finally alone last night in their car as they were being whisked away from the arena.
That went well, she probably said rolling her eyes.”
“I’ll just drop you off. I’m going to see Carly,” said Ted.
“Again. I guess I didn’t push her hard enough.”
