Americans viewing the recent failed coup attempt in Turkey as some exotic foreign news story -- the latest, violent yet hardly unusual political development to occur in a region constantly beset by turmoil -- should pause to consider that the prospect of similar instability would not be unfathomable in this country if Donald Trump were to win the presidency.

Going out on a limb here, it appears that Trump is not the one he has a problem with, Melania is.
We are all under government surveillance. A coup by anyone except a power grab by the current occupants is impossible.
Wow. These people are really around the bend. Completely gone.
Gee, and I thought open sedition was illegal.
Kirchik is a flaming homo too

A strong Alpha male like Trump probably has that journalist puckering. He’s probably jealous of Melania.
Add, "may well be prohibited from legally owning a gun".
Yeah, somehow I get the impression that LGBT fanboy James Kirchick doesn't have the same appreciation for Melania that most males do.
Shouldn’t that headline and story say Hillary instead of Trump?
If ever a coup were possible in America, it’d have been in the last 8 years, not the next. Do these people even understand the word, “reality?” A coup by journalists versus the military and police who hate the current state of affairs? Not to mention a nation of patriotic citizens armed by BHO.
I enjoy comments like this.
For decades, we on the Right have warned big government leftists that, regardless of their supposed intentions, giving government more and more control over our lives will end in disaster if the wrong people get in charge.
I don’t believe Trump/Pence are the “wrong people”, but obviously this snowflake does.
Well suck it up, Buttercup. You and your fellow travelers are responsible for the incredible power Trump will have when he assumes the Presidency. You have no one to blame but yourselves.
Oh for God's sake!
it’s Zippy!
Can you lead a coup from your safe space? Will there be designated safe zones during the coup? What if someone’s feelings get hurt?
I love the smell of desperation in the morning. :-)
The good news is the neither BlackLivesMatter nor La Raza have the brains nor the level of organization to pull off a coup to control a city, never mind the country. We're dealing with barely sentient street thugs, not Machiavellian masterminds like Fidel Castro or Vladimir Lenin. They may manage to destroy some city blocks with rioting/looting, hold up traffic for hours with rallies, and in some cases shoot some cops or civilians, but that's about their limit. To stage a coup, you need some concept of how to carry out complex operations in parallel, and then a notion of how to administer things when you seize power (even locally), and these guys simply aren't at that level.
Also, while the two recent BLM-inspired shooters had military backgrounds and were evidently adept gunmen, the overwhelming majority of black and chicano gangbangers only know the "spray and pray" style of shooting, which is basically worthless in confrontations with military, police, or civilians who know how to actually shoot.
Yeah, Knebel would need to revise the scenario.
Definitely the “bride” ... or “catcher” if you prefer.
The LA Times op-ed piece is the inevitable #NeverTrump globalist testing the waters. They have no problem with a Hillary soft dictatorship.
Note the liberal use of quotes from Rubio and other GOPe figures to buttress Kirchicks argument as well as soft peddling the threat to the republic posed by Hillary.
Some of the comments are quite interesting, some as though FReepers hit the LATimes piece.
