In his latest attacks on Trump, Jeb compared Trump to members of the American Party of the 1850s, who are referred to by their opponents as "Know-Nothings"

Most of you who may be aware of the so-called Know-Nothings of the 1850s, have been brain-washed by liberal biased accounts, which slander a group of American patriots who are the fathers of the immigration reform movement. The members of this movement never called themselves Know Nothings. They called themselves the American Party. While they have been called anti-Catholic, we often read about them being critical of German and Irish Catholics. But German and Irish Catholics were not the only Catholics immigrating to America in the 1840 and 1850s. Why do we not hear of oppression of Catholics of other ethnic groups?
Biased liberal histories have taught us that the American Party was a movement of hateful Protestants, who hated immigrants to America simply because they were Catholic. I ask Protestant Freepers who had ancestors living in America in the 1850s - Do you believe that your ancestors simply hated people for their religion, and for no other reason? Liberals today, accuse you of opposing immigration because you hate people simply for having Mexican ethnicity. Liberals historians have lied about American immigration reform patriots of the 1850s, in the same way they lie about immigration reform patriots of today. I read a book with a more accurate version of the history of the American Party 25 years ago.
What liberals will not tell you, is that the American Party was created by the first American Jew to be elected a member of the US Congress, Lewis C. Levin, a son of Jewish immigrants to the United States. For a movement that has been compared to the Klan, the majority of its members were anti-slavery activists, and were admired by black Americans living in the North. Liberal historians did not give you those facts, did they? The American Party broke up because of a split between the anti-slavery majority and a pro-slavery minority. These anti-slavery members of the American Party, teamed up with anti-slavery Whigs, in order to create the Republican Party. These are the people that liberal Democrat historians have labelled as the greatest haters and bigots in American history.
Some historical background is necessary. In the 1840s, there was no democracy in Europe, with the exception of Britain and Switzerland. Americans of the time regarded Europe to be the equivalent of what we, today, call third world hellholes. Europeans suffered great oppression, and many of them wanted to immigrate to America. In 1798, during the Presidency of John Adams, America passed a very tough immigration law. One needed to be a resident of the US for 14 years, in order to be a citizen. But in the first 50 years of American existence (1776-1826), America mostly attracted Protestant immigrants, who assimilated very easily to American culture. Under Thomas Jefferson, Americans came to realize that they were keeping out too many honest, hardworking, democracy-loving, European Protestant immigrants from American citizenship. Americans decided to relax the immigration laws in 1802, and citizenship required a 5 year waiting period instead of 14, and state and local courts were given equal authority with federal courts in interpreting those laws.
By the 1820s, the information that America had liberalized its immigration laws, spread throughout the despot-ruled European continent, and America began to receive a flood of immigrants from the 1820s onward. Americans could not help but notice, that immigrants from Protestant European countries, were, on average, assimilating better into American culture than immigrants from Catholic and Eastern Orthodox Christian countries. Well-travelled Americans also noticed that when Spanish, Portuguese, and Italian immigrants immigrated to Latin America, freedom did not increase in those countries, but the immigrants rebuilt the tyrannical regimes which they were escaping in Europe into new tyrannical regimes in Latin America. Protestants were denied religious freedom in Latin America. What did you expect American Protestants to do? Sit back and wait for their country to become as tyrannical as the oppressive regimes in Latin America and Europe? Catholics were treated better in the USA in the 1850s, than Protestants were treated in Latin America in the same time period. How come the liberal Democrat historians never tell you that?
Now we get to the Irish question. The most corrupt cities in America in the 1850s were run by Irish Catholics who were liberal Democrats, and Irish Catholics also had the highest rates of violent crime in America. The bloodiest and most violent riot in American history was carried out by Irish Catholics in New York in 1863 (the so-called draft riots). While the official death toll was 120, the actual number of deaths was believed to be much higher. The historian, Herbert Asbury, claims the violent Irish rioters caused the deaths of 2,000 people.
Law-abiding American Protestants suffered the agony of living with corrupt and violent-criminal Irish Catholics. Corruption and violent crime was a way of life for the tyrannical Catholic regimes of Latin America in the 1800s. The American Party was motivated by a hatred for corruption and violent crime among Irish Catholics, more than a hatred for Catholicism. But even worse than violent Irish criminals, were corrupt Irish politicians who encouraged criminal behavior, and corrupt Irish police officers who were too corrupt to enforce the law.
But Americans of the 1850s were not the only people who suffered from dysfunctional Irish immigrants. This article from a British government website, while politically correct, talks of how Irish immigration made life a living hell for the people of Scotland, until the Church of Scotland protested in 1923:

"...As late as 1923, the Church of Scotland could still publish a pamphlet entitled ‘The Menace of the Irish race to our Scottish Nationality’. The Irish were seen as drunken, idle, uncivilised and undermining the moral fibre of Scottish society. They were also seen as carriers of disease. Typhus, for example, was known as ‘Irish fever’..."
Thankfully, since around 1945, Irish Catholics have began to behave like civilized people. The best evidence for this is that a large percentage of them are Republicans, the party that was founded partly by members of the now-reviled American Party. But too many Americans have embraced the liberal Democrat narrative that the American Party hated people because of their religion.
Now to the German Catholics of the 1850s. The Protestant Reformation, as you all know, began in Germany. The country of Germany did not exist at the time of the Reformation, but there were several independent German-speaking kingdoms in that geographical area. Some kingdoms became Catholic and others became Protestant, and Protestants soon became the majority in the region. This is amazing because the German geographical region started out as 100 percent Catholic. In order to save the Catholic faith, German Catholics embraced a very reactionary form of Catholicism that was extremely clannish with hostility towards outsiders.
While German Catholics immigrants were better-behaved than the Irish, their extreme clannishness prevented many of them from learning English. American Protestants did not want to create a bilingual nation, like the French-Canadian situation in Canada, and restrictions on German Catholic immigration was to get those who were here to assimilate.
Not all Catholics were reviled in the 1850s. The Catholic nation of Switzerland has been experimenting with democracy for a longer time than America. Swiss immigrants to America were highly regarded, irrespective of whether they were German-Swiss, French-Swiss, or Italian-Swiss. Swiss Catholics had a good record of peaceful co-existence with Protestants, as the Protestant city of Geneva was known to educated American Protestants.
Interestingly, Jewish immigrants were very highly regarded in America in the 1850s. Jews suffered great oppression in Europe, and Jewish immigrants arrived in America as a freedom-hungry people. Jews from all countries assimilated very well in America, but German Jews were the most successful immigrants.
And contrary to stereotypes, the so-called Know-Nothings were not an ignorant people. A former American President, Millard Fillmore, supported the American Party. The movement had the support of well-travelled Americans, who knew that their country was better than foreign nations. And shockingly, many assimilated Catholics in Maryland and Louisiana, supported the American Party. That is something that the liberal Democrat historians will not mention.

Thomas Jefferson, in ‘Notes on Virginia’, was very clear in his opposition to immigration in large enough numbers to alter the character of American culture and politics at any level. The Know-Nothings stood on firm ground.
I liked Jeb as gov. In Florida. He turned the state around and was highly popular, but he was an absolute disaster as a pres. candidate.
He was never ahead and he stayed too long in the race after he was shown there was no chance in hell he would be the primary winner.

Yes. Jefferson also explained why he cut legal corners to purchase Louisiana to create a buffer between the Anglo culture of the Eastern States & the Hispanic culture to the South West. He was not anti-Mexican; but he understood the significant differences, and the consequences of too much “diversity,” in American communities. Our “Politically Correct” politicians, journalists & educators are simply in denial.

Irish immigrants to America were indeed known in the 19th century as given to crime, ignorance, religious indifference, and sexual license. (Sound like another ethnic group today?) Their transformation began and succeeded a half-century earlier than 1945, however. The man who accomplished that almost single-handedly was the Archbishop of New York, John "Dagger John" Hughes.
Becoming Archbishop in 1839, he founded New York's huge and successful Catholic school system. He also launched, with his priests and teaching orders of nuns, a project to civilize the huge immigrant Irish population of New York and New Jersey--teaching them to live their faith, be temperate in drink, to abstain from sex outside of marriage, and to love education, manners, and law and order. (Search the Manhattan Institute's City Journal for a great article on Dagger John.)
Abp. Hughes's success in civilizing not only the huge existing population of existing Irish immigrants, but the millions more (including my ancestors) who came over during the British-engineered Potato Famine of the 1840s within a few decades was astonishing, and should be studied for use today.
By the early 20th century, there were many prominent and respectable Irish-Americans in prosperous Irish enclaves of major cities. There is no way Al Smith could have become governor of (Protestant) New York State and then the Democratic nominee for President in 1928 if Abp. Hughes's transformation had not borne fruit several decades earlier.
