Donald J. Trumps campaign has signaled strongly to Republicans in Washington that he will pick Mike Pence, the governor of Indiana, as his running mate, though Republicans caution the partys mercurial presidential candidate may still backtrack on his apparent choice.
Mr. Trumps advisers have told national Republican officials that they are preparing to make an announcement with Mr. Pence, according to three people with knowledge of the conversations, who were not authorized to discuss them publicly. His campaign has said that it will unveil a running mate for Mr. Trump in New York on Friday.
Mr. Pence, a former congressman and radio host, emerged over the last week as the strong favorite of Mr. Trumps political advisers and senior officials in the Republican Party.
But Mr. Trump himself has sent conflicting signals in recent days, as he has subjected his potential running mates to a final round of screening. He addressed a rally in Indiana alongside Mr. Pence on Tuesday night and met privately with him several times.
On Wednesday, Mr. Trump and his children threw together a hasty series of conversations with other finalists in the vice-presidential search, including Gov. Chris Christie of New Jersey, Senator Jeff Sessions of Alabama and Newt Gingrich, the former House speaker.

How exciting... what exactly does he bring? Indiana is already a safe state??
Time will tell.
This is exciting!!
Don’t believe anything until I hear it from Trump’s own lips. The media are just playing games.
Kind of disappointing but Never Christie!
Indiana did go for 0bama in 2008, 49.9 to 48.9, but it went for Romney by over 10 points in 2012.
I think that Pence may have some appeal to OH, MI, PA, and WI, maybe even IL.
I understand the reasoning behind bringing in an establishment VP as a counterweight. This will deter the RNC and the rest of the GOP political machine from secretly helping Hillary and sabotaging Trump's campaign as they would likely otherwise do.
However, if Trump needed an establishment type for VP, you're right that picking one from a swing state like OH or PA would have been a better move.
Pence is the safe choice, he is acceptable to the Republican establishment and movement conservatives equally. He doesn’t have the personal baggage of a Newt Gingrich or Chris Christie. This should put to rest some of the worries about Trump being unpresidential and making some kooky, off the wall pick like his daughter or a reality TV star or something. On the other hand Pence is rather bland and milquetoast, I doubt he is going to set the campaign on fire, on the other hand he shouldn’t do any damage either...like I said “safe choice”.
Trump has been known to play the media.
I don't know much about him.
Saw the list. Noticed it. Dumb...because whether VP or not, he will be a speaker. The list says....”partial”. Just the media playing games.
Pence is respected nationally in the GOP, while still being a conservative. This is a party unity pick and defuses the NeverTrump idiots.
Who can Hillary counter with?
Kaine?
Castro?
Warren?
I sure as hell hope so!!
Pence unlike Newt has executive experience running a state. If there is one thing that is obvious. Candidates with no executive experience make horrible presidents and candidates.
He has media experience being a radio host.
And he has experience in the Congress and he is a bit younger then Newt. That is important.
Gravitas. But unlike Cheney, who also brought gravitas, Pence is actually a viable choice to run for president from a strong position should Trump win. Cheney could not because of his serious health problems.
Pence says hes a Evangelical Christian first, a Conservative second and a Republican third....he will help solidify the evangelical vote...which Trump pretty much has...
But it the Yang to Donalds Ying....adds more “stability” whatever in the heck that means when dealing with the Donald
I am surprised they are leaking now....but I suspect it is because the Rules committee is meeting today and by picking a certifiably conservative candidate for VP it will take whatever wind they still had thier sails...
Can you believe in a convention of voer 2,000 voting members that 28 is all that is needed to bring something to a floor vote? That is insane.
They need to DELETE the conscience rule...delegates are BOUND to themz that brought them as pappy used to say!
