I can’t remember the last time a VP candidate was announced at the convention. Romney announced Ryan on the Saturday before. McCain announced Palin the Friday before.

I believe Nixon announced Agnew after Nixon was the official nominee, but correct me if I am wrong.

Reagan named his VP pick about the same time before the convention in “76”, and it cost him the delegates of Mississippi who then switched to Ford to give him the nomination. Had Reagan waited he would have defeated Ford at the convention in the way Cruz was trying to do.
