"They say it was the roughest campaign ever in the history of Republican politics, but what you do is you go to sleep for a couple of days and you wake up and you honor [the pledge]," Donald Trump said. (AP Photo) Trump unloads on former GOP opponents who refuse to back him

By GABBY MORRONGIELLO (@GABRIELLAHOPE_) • 6/29/16 5:26 PM SHARE TWEET SMSMore Donald Trump railed against several of his Republican primary opponents on Wednesday night for declining to endorse him in the general election, going so far as to suggest "they should never be allowed to run for public office again."

"I have guys out there and if you really think about it, they're really sore losers," Trump told supporters during a campaign rally in Bangor, Maine.

Trump was referring to at least seven GOP presidential hopefuls who signed a loyalty pledge to support their party's presidential nominee and have since declined to do so. Such candidates include former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, businesswoman Carly Fiorina and Ohio Gov. John Kasich.

"It was a rough campaign," he conceded. "They say it was the roughest campaign ever in the history of Republican politics, but what you do is you go to sleep for a couple of days and you wake up and you honor [the pledge]."

The presumptive Republican nominee continued, claiming that he considered the pledge to be "legally binding" and assuring his supporters that he would have honored it had Kasich, Cruz or any other GOP candidate clinched the nomination instead.

"There are people I don't like or particularly respect on that stage, but I would have honored it," Trump said. "I wouldn't have gone crazy, yelling it from the loudest building."

Trump himself routinely changed his position on the pledge during the primary, threatening more than once to leave the Republican party and launch an indepedent bid.

"But you know what, we have people who haven't honored the pledge and that's a terrible thing," he told the crowd. "They signed a pledge saying they will abide, they will back the candidate of the party and now they sit back and ... they broke their word."

"In my opinion, they should never be allowed to run for public office again because what they did is disgraceful," he added.

Some of the billionaire's former opponents have said that in addition to declining to endorse Trump, they will not attend next month's GOP convention.

Except that Cruz ISN’T a ‘small government, Constitutionally based, liberty minded, conservative’. He talks a good game, but when the truly important votes come down, he’s a no-show or votes with the liberals.

And even if what you say is true about the ‘platform’ affecting what Mr. Trump does, Cruz’s behavior isn’t giving him control over the platform; it’s just reducing his power base all the more.

And EVEN if he could adjust the official positions like you seem to think, we are fighting a damned war with the left for the survival of our nation, and every second that the Cruz contingent refuses to get behind Mr. Trump takes our chances of victory a little further away. And every second it happens, the less willing we will be to cooperate with you.

It is important that Cruz and other small government, Constitutionally based, liberty minded, conservatives protect the Republican platform from Trump or any other person who is not rooted in conservative principals.

That's odd. We do not have a small government, it's just the opposite, and I haven't seen anything conservative out of D.C. Just the opposite.

Who are all these conservatives you speak of, where are they, and what have they done for the past several decades?

The fact that they won’t honor their word/pledge speaks volumes about why Americans got it right NOT to vote for them.

Obviously you have a problem with what I said, but you never said why. I’m willing to discuss why you disagree.

This whole thread is devoted to telling Trump what he must do to win. I din’t like your advice and neither did most of the posters on this thread.

Who are all these conservatives you speak of...

Ted Cruz, Mike Lee, Jim Jordan, Dave Brat, Louis Gohmert, etc...

...and what have they done for the past several decades?

They have fought against the people that Trump has supported and donated to. Such as McConnell, Reid, Pelosi, Boehner, Ryan, etc...

And what have all these big D.C. conservatives done for the past several decades?

A numbered list will suffice.

Yay more Cruzie talking points!

And you didn’t answer the question other than vague ‘fought against.’

What victories did they achieve? Anything? Anything? Bueller? Bueller?

I am old and slow. Unlike most here if a thread interests me I read every post. Your post struck me as a common comment by the Trump would be advisors.

Btw, you named 3 or 4 in D.C. who are these big D.C. conservatives, including Cruz.

That’s it?

I don’t understand what you are looking for.

There were lots and lots of planks in the platform. Many of them were good and are similar to ones today.

I didn’t include those.

Many were very bad and different to ones today. I included some of these.

One in particular ( against health insurance mandate) was good back then and is not supported by the presumptive nominee. I hope Cruz and the other conservatives have enough control over the agenda that they keep it in the platform and don’t let Trump take it out. If he endorses Trump, releases his candidates and abandons the fight for conservatism in the platform, things like this may get taken out.

I hope Cruz and his conservative supporters shut the he## up. The election is over and planks are ignored by almost everyone. Without looking them up can you name one? Guess what the voters can't either because they mean absolutely nothing, if they did abortion would be illegal.

Victories are hard to come by when you are outnumbered so badly by so many liberals.

I can think of a couple though. Cruz and the Liberty Caucus killed the Gang of 8. Many of the people who supported the Gang of 8 were funded by Trump.

Cruz and the Liberty Caucus shut down the government in '13 which led to landslide electoral victories in '14. The shutdown would have had even greater impact if the leadership (which was funded by Trump) actually cared about winning and supported the effort.

These are a couple of examples.

It would be nice to have even more conservatives in Washington to achieve even greater victories for conservatism. Maybe nationalists and populists can do some good to. I hope so.

1: Nnnnnno, us Cantorizing Cantor was what killed the Gang of 8. Cruz was utterly impotent (at best) because it passed the Senate and would have passed the house if we hadn’t stomped Cantor.

2: Give me proof that the shutdown led to the 2014 victories. And whoop de farking doo, ‘we’ got victories, leading to the same people we voted in giving Obama everything he wanted even FASTER.

0 for 2 so far.

3: You mean the Republican leadership that your boy Cruz is busy sharing a bed with? The ones that he claimed to fight against only to vote exactly the way they wanted when the chips were down? The ones that funded his campaign?

Wow. No wonder they call it the Cruz cult.

‘Cruz and the Liberty Caucus killed the Gang of 8.’

When you post outright lies, you destroy your credibility.

LOL.

According to moderates and liberals in the Republican party, Cruz is dangerous because he won’t work with the leadership. According to the media and the Democrats he is mean and evil for single handedly shutting down the government. According to Trump during the primary, Cruz couldn’t succeed as President because he couldn’t get along with the leadership. Now, according to you he didn’t do any of that. If he did, it didn’t work. Even if it did work, I can’t PROVE that it worked. Cruz gets along great with the leadership. Etc....

LOL

Cruz called into the Limbaugh show on June 12 2013 after the Gang of 8’s passage in the Senate to make sure everyone knew how bad it was. He went on all the news shows to get the word out. He held meetings with the Liberty Caucus and other Representatives to ensure it died in the House. Cantor lost his seat in June of ‘14 - a year after the bill cleared the Senate. It was dead as a door nail by then.

“I think I can say this with integrity and good judgement: I believe without the vigorous opposition of Ted Cruz, this bill likely would have passed. So we need to thank him.” - Jeff Sessions

You are so caught up in the cult of Trump that you have created a fictional history that you actually believe in order to support your narrative. Seriously, you might need help.

I really wanted to have a fun exchange of ideas and opinions with you. However, you are either a liar, a fool or mentally unstable.

Jeff Sessions subsequently went on record to affirm that Brat’s election is what killed Amnesty. Can you honestly not know that Cantor lost his seat the SAME WEEK Boehner had scheduled a vote—and that two independent vote counts showed that it would pass?

‘Levin pressed Sessions to further clarify: “So Dave Brat’s defeat of Eric Cantor outside of Richmond sent a message– and a tsunami message– that got the attention of House Republicans, correct?” Levin asked.

“That is correct,” Sessions said. “I don’t think there’s any doubt about that.”’
