On this weekend’s broadcast of “Fox News Sunday,” Washington Post columnist George Will explained why he left the Republican Party over presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump.
Will said, “I left it for the same reason I joined it in 1964 when I voted for Barry Goldwater, because I was a conservative. I leave for the same reason, I’m a conservative. To give you a time line, shortly after Trump became the presumptive nominee he had a summit meeting with Paul Ryan where they stressed their vast shared ground, which is more important than their differences. I thought that was puzzling because Paul Ryan still didn’t endorse him. After Trump went after the Mexican judge, then Paul Ryan endorsed him. I decided that, in fact, this is not my party anymore. I changed my registration to unaffiliated 23 days ago. I hardly made an announcement. I mentioned this in a meeting with the Federalist Society. The long and the short of it is, as Ronald Reagan said when he changed his registration, I did not leave the Democratic Party, the Democratic Party left me.”
Responding to Trump’s tweet about his party departure Will added, “He has an advantage on me. He can say everything he knows about any subject in 140 characters and I can’t.”
George Will, one of the most overrated political pundits (who lost his way long ago), has left the Republican Party. He's made many bad calls

Given his goofy granny glasses and bow tie, I’d say he’s got another announcement coming out soon.
Will wants to conserve the establishment, no matter who they are, so in his mind I guess that makes him a conservative.
Romney was HORRIBLE and even though I couldn’t stand him I voted for him because it was better than having 4 more years of Obama..the same ones complaining now about Trump I dont remember a PEEP out of them when Romney was running..apparently the guy who was a Conservative on Monday, a moderate on Tuesday, a liberal on Wednesday, a “Progressive” on Thursday, back to Conservative on Friday, etc etc was A OK with these same people crying about Trump not being Conservative..I frankly don’t care if Trump is Conservative or not, I will feel safe with a President Trump, I wont be able to sleep at night with a President Clinton
George Will is as ‘conservative’ as Obama is “American”
Georgie has been an establishment shill for decades.
Will has never impressed me as very conservative.
“The long and the short of it is, as Ronald Reagan said
Mark Levin recalls: George Will tried to cleanse the GOP of Ronald Reagan and his supporters in 76”
How ironic. On Twitter there was a #NeverTrump dolt who was defending George Will & calling him a “Reagan Conservative”. I hope I see him again..
No balls on him, but he walks. How is that possible?
George Will can take a walk on the South side for all I care.
Or.... George Will is a conservative like Bruce Jenner is a man....
She would divorce one.
What a POS will turned out to be. He must be on the dole somewhere.
I believe george misspoke. What he meant to say is “I am a pathetic LIB loser”.
Weird. Works both ways.
He's leaving not because he's a conservative, but because he's part of the elite which lives in a different world from conservatives.
He calls himself a conservative the same way the Roman Empire kept calling itself the Roman Republic.
As the light shines, it all becomes much clearer. Each of these rats real colors come shining though as they go slithering to their true home. Bye, George, your deceit has ended.
Conservative? In many ways he espoused conservative positions, but when push comes to shove we find that George Will loves his position and patrons more than he loves his country.
He’s about conserving power and privilege for the political nobility. Hell, if it weren’t for Trump, we’d be choosing between a Bush and a Clinton again.
Conservatism based on class instead of liberty isn’t a virtue.
George is a politically correct globalist shill. Independents don’t want him either.
