I’m opposed to a food ban just like I’m opposed to a big soda ban.

Politicians have no business micromanaging people’s eating and drinking habits.

We’ve already given up a great deal of our freedom. Let lePage mind his own business and we’ll mind ours.

The morality is complicated by the fact that this is a kind of de facto insurance. “I paid for this for years in my paycheck; now that I am down and out, I simply ought to get it as a matter of fairness.”

If the poor want to buy booze or junk food with their OWN hard-earned money, that’s their business. When the taxpayers are buying THEIR booze and junk food (or gourmet food), that’s the taxpayers business.

LePage isn;t banning food. He’s just setting parameters for the menu of the government-operated soup kitchen.

I would agree, except this is people spending taxpayer money in the form of SNAP benefits - this is not people spending their own money.

I would argue that the governor is not controlling what people eat, but rather what people buy with EBT cards.

They can still purchase food on the banned list but must do so with their own money.

Well if I am buying their food, I have something to say about it IMO.

i don’t want to have to pay for their food and then also pay to cover medical costs from their poor eating habits.

“Politicians have no business micromanaging people’s eating and drinking habits”

I disagree. They have a right to micromanage people’s eating habits when the taxpayer is paying for those eating habits.

Politicians have no business micromanaging people’s eating and drinking habits.

They do if I'm paying for it.

We’ve already given up a great deal of our freedom.

You're not free to squander MY money.

Let lePage mind his own business and we’ll mind ours.

LePage is doing is job, in slashing spending and looking out for the taxpayers....a rare bird in today's politics.

And speaking of minding your own business....justify that turd-world Califorina!

I agree. We should cancel the food stamp program altogether.

Agreed. .

EBT funds should not be used to purchase items such as cigarettes, alcoholic beverages and other like items because that is not the purpose of SNAP.

Other than the above, the government has no business telling parents how to raise their children, what values to teach their children or what groceries parents must to buy to feed their families. Period.

This is about control. Just as no-fly/no buy is about gun control, this "reform" is about food control.

Want to “reform” the SNAP program? Go after the fraud.
Want more control over the lives of individuals? Line up behind LePage. Want the government to be a never ending presence in our private lives? Keep making these exceptions.

These people are on the dole. People who earn their living have a right to buy anything they want. This isn’t about freedom but leeching on an epic scale.

It sounds like LePage is screwing with the libs and exposing problems with EBT program rather than actually pushing for government-mandated healthy eating.

The question, should Fat Albert the dude on welfare be able to use taxpayer dollars to buy himself Little Debbie (or caviar if he were so inclined)? Or should he be restricted to buying ordinary breakfast/lunch/dinner items, basically staples to keep himself alive and pay for dessert/snacks/luxury items himself? Seem like questions worth asking to me.
