Voting is under way in a historic referendum on whether the UK should remain a member of the European Union or leave. A record 46,499,537 people are entitled to take part, according to provisional figures from the Electoral Commission. Polling stations opened at 07:00 BST and will close at 22:00 BST. It is only the third nationwide referendum in UK history and comes after a four-month battle for votes between the Leave and Remain campaigns. In common with other broadcasters, the BBC is limited in what it can report while polls are open but you can follow the results as they come in across the BBC after polls close on Thursday evening.

Thanks. The main problem is our craven politicians and the liberal media establishment. Once we get rid of them the rest will sort itself out.
Again, I keep my fingers crossed for a good, a very good result in Britain tonight.
In theory yes they could - but chances of that are next to nothing.
My suspicion is that the betting is being jiggered for propaganda purposes.
If your economic interests are in the many billions of pounds, then what’s a few million in bets for “remain” to generate a propaganda point? Bookmakers are really neutral in this; they match bets and take a cut. It’s already been noted by Ladbrokes (major bookmaker in UK) that the average bet for “remain” is much higher, but there were many more bets being placed on “leave.”
Jeff Kuhner reports some initial results are coming out and that the Leave ballots are having the mark erased off, so the fraud has begun...
Yeah. I agree with you.
Though THAT might backfire.
Make remainers complacement and stay at home.
*crosses fingers*
Nothing is set in concrete. An independent UK would have a lot more flexibility to develop a closer arrangement. Why not negotiate trade and visa arrangements with the US rather than Europe?
As I noted above, people tend to limit their thinking to the current reality rather than what could be.
Seems like there is a Margin of Fraud in UK balloting as well.
Thankfully this will be my last election cycle. I agree that 2016 is a “must participate” election. After this, though, the voter registration gets canceled, and I am an official NONVOTER come the end of 2016.
Lord, I can’t wait!!
We’ll see. My concern is that it’s so close as to be within the Margin of Fraud.
I am just worried that a majority both sides of the Atlantic want the philospher kings to rule if you saw my discussion with Scaniaboy.
One of my favourite thinkers said something like this:
Predict one year I can do it well, predict 5 years I can do it ok, predict 30 years I would have no idea.
Think it was Drucker.
Obviously my paraphrases of his thoughs.
Almost the most important question within such societal turmoil is how to act yourself within it. Your family. Your children.
One place where European and American conservatism are a bit different (I think) is that Burkean conservatives keep in mind the bond between generations. Our ancestors brought us here, here we are, let us make sure our children can have it as good or better.
I view it differently and probably at odds with most FReepers. In my view, its the ends that matter, notsomuch the means. Whether its a Monarchy, Representative Republic, an Oligarchy or whatever. There are examples of each of those forms of governance where it has worked out well, and other examples where it has been an abject disaster.
We really need to shift our focus to the end results.
I am praying for a LEAVE vote today in the U.K.
Bookies right now are saying 84% that they remain. I hope they are wrong. I would like to see Great Britain become Great again.
Or perhaps better stated: focus less on the drama and details of the governmental mechanism and more on the results it delivers.
It is really an interesting dicussion to be had.
I know many young Brits vote Remain solely for the “results”.
For the north. Cities like Liverpool, the EU have been a God send. Thatcher wanted to depopulate it. (Guess like America putting Detroit into shut down and close down).
So the end results?
There are a lot of strong empirical evidence as well as theoretical arguments from people like Hayek that liberal Democracy is the way to go.
Though who knows.
Maybe the Romans were on to something.
Republican governance, replaced with short term dictators when needed, then republican governance continued.
The actual outcome of the vote is irrelevant because the reported count will be for Remain no matter what.
We spoke those words often in 2PPCLI.
15 minutes
Just perused an English forum where the majority is for stay.
They share bloody Nigel Farage images amongst each others and laugh.
I am afraid no matter what the outcome of this vote.
Winter is coming.
Agreed, like Stalin said, all that matters is Who counts the votes.
I suspect the ideal form of governance is also related to how advanced technology and markets are. If you read Rees-Mogg, the up and coming form of “governance” is something closer to anarchism. While I certainly don’t consider myself an anarchist, the ability to create your own “stuff” from raw materials and have a more or less first world lifestyle on your own initiative is going to render a lot of governance irrelevant.
Who cares about manufacturing policy and tariffs when you can just make what you need with your digital printer?
The Telly is warming up.
I’ve topped up the distilled water, this could be a long haul. :)
