A partial federal ban on gay men donating blood is "discriminatory" and hurtful in that it turned away potential donors after the June 12 massacre that killed 49 men and women at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, 24 U.S. Senators said in a letter Monday.
Sens. Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell, D-Wash., were among 23 Democrats and one Republican -- Sen. Mark Kirk, R-Illinois -- who signed the letter to U.S. Food and Drug Administration commissioner Dr. Robert Califf.
...
"Yet, some of those most touched by this tragedy -- members of the LGBT community, who are especially eager to contribute to the response effort -- are finding themselves turned away."
...
"Based on advances in science and blood screening and safety technology, we expect that the new, one-year deferral policy is just the first step toward ending discrimination against MSM (men who have sex with men) in our donor deferral policies," the senators wrote.
"A one-year deferral continues to perpetuate inaccurate stereotypes about an entire group of individuals, and remains a de facto lifetime ban for many healthy gay and bisexual men."

My husband has rare blood and is the one that is most needed O negative, universal blood. He also gives double reds and plasma all year long. He constantly gets calls for donation. He goes.
If they say gays can donate without year wait; I am going to tell him he needs to call American Red Cross and tell them he will refuse to donate anymore blood.
They generally have AIDS from their sexual acts. I sure would not want homosexual blood in my body.
E.Plur.....I can’t donate blood anymore because I’m on a blood thiner (warfarin).
WTH is that supposed to mean? I have two forms of Leukemia so I am not a Blood Donor, unless you want some of course.
My Wife has O Positive Blood which is considered being UNIVERSAL DONOR, so she Donates regularly.
“Ban on convicted child molester getting a baby-sitting license is discriminatory!”
The senators are ignorant. The incidence of mad cow disease is extremely remote, far more remote than HIV, yet I was one month away from being disallowed to donate blood because of the years I lived in Germany while in the Army.
Of course it’s discrimination.
Yes Stupid indeed. Who wants blood from an infested Sodomite. Guess Dracula don’t care
Arkansas Bloodsuckers, The Clintons, Prisoners and The Blood Trade
To me that says all I need to know about blood donation in this country.
No doubt that were it ever necessary to give them blood, these Liberal Diversity Crusaders would only accept blood from homosexuals. Yeah, sure.
“You are also not supposed to donate blood if you have ingested aspirin in the past 72 hours.”
I don’t remember them ever asking me that, but it’s been years. I can’t donate because I ate beef in the UK in the 1980s.
If it's not good enough for him it's not good enough to me.
As the years go by I’ve gained a better understanding of why Caligula made his horse a Roman Consul.
Oh, you are management material.
With some, there is no doubt.
I will gladly die of AIDS or any other horrible disease if doing so will spare a single gay person who wants to donate blood even a moment’s hurt feelings.
You sure sounded like you were incensed that homos couldn’t donate.
>>See the other story I just posted on it, in which experts say the blood ban will remain in effect for years:<<
But liberals are like Terminators: they just keep pressing and pressing and pressing and pressing. Over time, Conservatives can’t hold back the insanity and we keep electing people who have no desire to go on the offensive.
Gay marriage, men in women’s restrooms (soon if not already: showers), how long before we lose this one too and more people start dying due to the blood supply being contaminated with HIV?
This is the opening salvo, like getting Homosexuality and “gender confusion” off the mental disorder list.
Insanity.
Good point, let them sign a release of liability and make the government agree to take care of all medical care, drugs and other expenses for anyone contracting HIV through donated blood!
