The Secrets of Sugar - The Fifth Estate
"Weve heard for years about the dangers of eating too much fat or salt. But there have never been recommended limits for sugar on Canadian food labels, despite emerging research that suggests the sweet stuff may be making more of us fat and sick. In the fifth estates season premiere, Gillian Findlay digs into the surprising science and the reaction from the food industry to reveal The Secrets of Sugar. Has the sugar industry been hiding an unsavoury truth from consumers?
A small but influential group of medical researchers is stirring up the health debate, linking sugar not just to rising obesity rates but also to a host of diseases including cancer, heart disease and Alzheimers.
We put a family of four on a healthy diet to try to beat their sugar habit and track the surprising results. We talk to leading scientists and their critics. And we ask the food industry why those ingredient labels are far from clear when it comes to how much sugar is really on your plate.

I am so impressed. Great/amazing testimonial that it can be done.
For me:
Daily 2 meals of meat to satiety, one bulb (not clove) raw garlic per day, sugar free koolaid, coffee, iced coffee as needed. One day a week, no carb stirfry, last week it was 1 head of cabbage, 2 zucchini 4lbs pork with soy sauce.
4 miles every other day, martial arts on those days, resistance training off days.
Never use AC, 4gal fluids daily go in my mouth. Fat melting away. Energy is incredible, packing on muscle, shoulder joint issue I had is no longer in the way. In the morning straight out of bed rather than touch my toes, press my knuckles to the floor, no loosening up. 55 and ready to roll now, by the time I see Christmas decorations I want to look like the 45yo version of the animated Viking in my.profile ;)
“If you are overweight, you ate too much food.
Yes, some of our food choices may be foolish, but,
you ate too much food.”
And you aren’t getting enough exercise.
Wow, at what age did you start this?
Awesome job. I too am a believer in garlic.
But 4 gallons of water? That’s a lot of time going in, going out.
I actually measure it. It’s a lot. And I drink nothing cold either, no AC, no ice, no refrig drinks.
As commenters point out, that's not the job of the government. As others pointed out sugar is not dangerous. Sugar provides is an oxidizer. Oxidants are said to be bad, but oxidation is how your muscles work. Any food including water is bad along with good and any is dangerous in large quantities. But the quantity of sugar that is dangerous varies for people just like water or anything else.
When I come in from the road l, I’ll use a 12cup coffeepot as a glass, because I’ll drink that without coming up for air.
I’ve come to the conclusion that you can eat fat, or carbs, but not both. Fat seems to burn fat, while I gain weight with carbs.
It absolutely is toxic when one consumes too much. Good for you on the dramatic changes!
I cut out sugar for about a year and a half and stayed quite thin with no other efforts. I got tired of missing out and decided to have a dessert on Sundays. Boom, a ten pound weight gain that has stayed even though I’m eating less overall. Amazing what it does.
It is not *what* foods we eat, it is how much, and how much exercise we get.
Food has become cheaper and more convenient. Physical exercise is far less necessary to make a living.
Together, they have produced lots of overweight people.
If you look were people are thinner, there are two common threads. Food is more expensive, and physical exertion more necessary. Just walking a few miles a day instead of driving or sitting at home and having something delivered, contributes enormously to lowering your weight.
As I pointed out, I don't trust or like the heavy hand of government.
“No exercise, no diet, just no sugar.”
Say it is not a diet does not make it so. You underwent an enormous change in diet, which restricted your choice of food tremndously.
That is a diet, by definition. Congradulations on your weight loss. You are doing it the right way, by changing your diet. Good for you.
But do not tell us that no diet was involved.
I guarantee that your intake of calories was reduced a tremendous amount.
If you show me to be wrong, I will be intrigued, but skeptical.
go on the ketogenic diet and you will lose weight.
“It is not *what* foods we eat, it is how much, and how much exercise we get.”
It is much more complex than that. If you have cravings for food, you will end up eating more. OK, that is psychological, but it is still real. If I eat lots of carbs, I get severe (migraine-level) headaches between meals, which eating more carbs will stop - for a few hours. But if I emphasize fats and protein, I simply do not get the headaches, even if I’m eating just one meal a day. I can eat less without the cravings and debilitating pain.
Energy in vs energy out is not the total picture.
I tell people that regardless of your auto use otherwise, walk to the store for groceries, take the bus back. Soon you’ll be walking both ways. Walking for speed on the balls of your feet, one day you’ll feel good and be tempted to jog. That’s what I did.
Walking to get food makes the exercise easy, you desire the goal of lunch very much, lol. And mentally the walking is a “break”. But I needed to up my fitness, and walking for speed led to jogging like falling off a log.
Lately I’ve respected my age and the heat wave, though. I start at a walk and up it, but if I feel like crap I don’t push it. Usually I’m OK I just sweat like hell.
Yes, sugar is a major problem...heck they add it to so much...like canned peas. Food satisfaction is the issue...I’m finding more (healthy organic butter) fat and more salt (himalayan or celtic) satisfy me...and don’t put on the pounds. Also intermittent fasting...or at least going for 12 hours without eating.
I’m fat and have been since the 4th grade. I do not blame food, I blame myself for eating too much of it.
