The Philadelphia City Council on Thursday voted 13-4 in favor of a bill that became known as the soda tax. It will impose a 1.5-cent tax per ounce for soft drinks and other sugar-sweetened beverages include fruit drinks, sports drinks, flavored water, and energy drinks. The tax goes into effect at the beginning of next year. Notably, it excludes baby formula, any product that has a base that is majority milk, and some other healthier offerings predetermined by the city.

These people want to control every aspect of your life.
I think your math is correct! Unbelievable! Maybe no one in Philly can do the math.
First they started with cigarettes....next, everything. Governments are blood suckers.
Hmmm. I smell lawsuit. Think about it. They're going to tax your 32-ounce fast food soda as 32 ounces of actual soda, but the cups are at least half full of ice.
Even without Mayor Nutter (aka Nutcake), the Philadelphia City Council continues to demonstrate that Democrats are batcrap crazy and should not be allowed to serve in any governmental capacity including city dog catcher or sewer cleaner.
At least dog catchers and sewer cleaners do positive things for our way of life. Explain to me how the Phila. City Council or NY City Council do anything sane for the people.
Translation: Tax proceeds will also go to democrat campaign funds.
I foresee an overweight black man being chocked to death by the Philadelphia Police selling loosies cans in the streets...
For now, it will have a minimal effect on the soda industry. But over time, such measures could become problematic for an industry that has reported 11 straight years of volume declines for carbonated soft drinks in the U.S
There is only ONE WAY to remedy this, ALL These Beverage companies need to band together and STOP ALL DISTRIBUTION to Philly. If they do, this law will be REPEALED in a WEEK!!! GUARANTEED.
90% of PROFIT of ALL Fast Food, Restaurants, is BEVERAGES, Namely SODA. A Complete halt in Distribution will CRIPPLE THE ENTIRE CITY and Business Community.
These RAT bureaucrats need more money to line their pockets. They are nothing but spoiled brat Lefties who dont care about anything but feeling good about themselves and advertising their own moral virtue to everybody else. In this case they are using their self-righteous virtue as a veil to hide their financial gain. They don’t think we can see through that?
“Game-changing soda tax”
What “game” does this “change”?
movie theatre patrons already pay this price for popcorn and soda, and now to add more to soda prices.
Throw the soda into the harbor. Its been done before.
Or in this case just leave it on the shelf.
Next, in a bid to expand its budget and powers as all agencies try to do every year, the Department of Weights and Measures (they same agency that certifies gasoline pumps) will insist that they be able to fit every soda fountain with a counter to measure the amount of soda dispensed and calculate how much tax to charge.
Is there one facet of life that government doesn’t want to tax, regulate or subsidize?
Can we drink water?
The people in Philly are so stupid they can’t be trusted to decide what to drink. So the city masterminds will herd them toward preferred beverages through taxation.
That crack in the liberty bell just got wider.
It sounds more like they want to drive business to suburbia.
But then, if people change their behavior and drink less soda, then the tax income to the city will be less than budgeted.
This tax income has already been factored into their future budgets. So cuts in spending may well happen when this tax doesn’t deliver the anticipated tax revenue.
This is nothing more than a cash grab. Few people will change their habits due to this pointless tax, and those imposing it are well aware of that fact.
They are after the revenue. Nothing more, nothing less, no matter what they claim.
