A Portland restaurateur used her businesss Facebook page to speak her mind on assault weapons inciting a backlash from gun rights advocates.
Anne Verrill, owner of Grace on Chestnut Street, and Foreside Tavern & Side Bar in Falmouth, published the post on Wednesday, along with a photo of an assault rifle similar to the one used in the Orlando massacre.
I have spent 12 years, intentionally, not being political on this page Let me be clear, this is not a political issue, she wrote, according to several reports. This is a human rights issue. If you own this gun, or you condone the ownership of this gun for private use, you may no longer enter either of my restaurants, because the only thing I want to teach my children is love.
Verrill, who later deleted the post, told BDN Portland that she stood by her comments, but said she was only addressing a specific firearm.
I am in no way, shape or form trying to lump a group of people and tell them I will not serve them, Verrill said. I spoke very specifically about a specific gun, that was specifically used to terrorize a group of people who are now all dead.
The message prompted many commenters on Facebook to criticize the post, though some did defend her. The restaurant also received a number of negative reviews, citing the post.
Big old target now painted on your business now that criminals know you and your patrons do not carry protection, one person said.

So if I showed up with a T-shirt emblazoned with an AK-47, that would be ok right? Stupid liberals.
Well, that’s reason #1 why she is today’s Stupidest Person on the Planet. How in God’s name will she police that?!
I'll bet she's just fine with abortions though.
Exactly. “Assault rifles” are just the old camel’s nose. This time, literally. Our so called “government” is using Islamic terrorism to take away the rights of the American people. All of the old communists who have come and gone would be asking themselves, “Why didn’t WE think of that?”
I think her main motivation was to get attention and show herself to be a good anti-gun liberal. These people don’t really think about the consequences of their ideas.

Does she think the notoriety of having her place shot up will draw in enough new customers to pay for the damage?
You’re right again, Miss Jamestown!
Why is THIS not just like the gay wedding cake situation!!! ???? I say WE raise a huge stink over this!!!!
Looks like a good way to make an important point. She has no clue who owns an AR15. No more than anyone knows which Muslims are radicalized (AKA actually following their religion and its terrorist founder).
Why go some place where you are a target in shooting galley?
But parse the words, a little, if you please. No “assault rifles”. First of all, there is no legally defined category of sidearms that is called an “assault rifle”. There are scary-looking guns that superficially resemble certain military weapons, but functionally, their method of being handled and fired is very much like a typical wooden-stock hunting rifle. Nor are they easily concealed, as would be a revolver or pistol.
Note that the statement was “no assault rifles”. Does this mean that some imaginary device, that would never exist anyway, is the only one banned? That smaller handguns, or conventional rifles or shotguns, are OK? Just what did the statement mean, anyway?
The Islamic jihadist terrorists would show up with Sig Sauer MCX rifles, Colt AR-15 rifles, or even M16A2 mission rifles. None of these, technically, are “assault rifles” (remember, the category simply does not exist).
I'd like to see one of the last remaining conservatives in Portland publicly push her on this.
I don’t own one of those AR’s (sadly, as I believe We the People should be armed to the TEETH), but I can’t imagine feeling welcomed in that place anyway. I hate fine dining, with all its pomp and discomfort.
Best thing to do is flood her facebook pages with comments.
...from the trendy, Assachusetts end of Maine. Wonder if she’s a former Masshole (it’s in the dictionary)?
Focusing on the material cause rather than the final cause. It is the terrorist who is evil, not the gun.
This lady missed the latest PC language assault.
“Assault rifles” are now being called “weapons of war.”
Guess that polled better.
I'd almost guarantee she's from Boston. Unless she's from Jersey, CT, or NYC. I don't know any native Mainers who would be so dumb as to drive away their business intentionally. It's not like she owns the only restaurant in Portland (or Falmouth, for that matter).
As a point of interest, it would be worthwhile to check back in this time next year and see if the place is still open for business. Tourists will get her by for the next few months, but Maine has a long, long winter, and Mainers have even longer memories.
