Top conservatives meet at secret dinner to discuss Cruz's future
The Hill ^ | 6/15/2016 | Jonathan Swan

Posted on 06/15/2016 3:42:55 PM PDT by lodi90

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) attended a confidential dinner with more than 20 top conservatives on Tuesday night to plan his comeback as a movement leader in the mold of Ronald Reagan.

The dinner was at the Virginia home of conservative activist Brent Bozell, and the agenda was to plot Cruz’s future and the future of the conservative movement. The undertone of the dinner was about how to position Cruz for a future tilt at the presidency and to spearhead the conservative movement from his seat in the Senate, those in attendance said.

Dining with Cruz and his chief of staff, Paul Teller, were some of the most powerful figures in the conservative movement.

The spectrum of economic, national security and social conservatives seated at the table included Heritage Foundation President Jim DeMint, Club for Growth President David McIntosh, direct-mail guru Richard Viguerie, National Rifle Association board member and former Cincinnati Mayor Ken Blackwell, and Susan B. Anthony List President Marjorie Dannenfelser, sources confirmed.

According to those in attendance, the leaders discussed how they could work more effectively together and how to harness their vast financial and human networks in the service of conservative principles and Cruz's career.

Combined, those at the table have access to hundreds of millions of dollars and some of the largest ground armies on the right.

There was no specific discussion of electoral politics or whether Cruz will support presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump this cycle.

Many of the leaders at the dinner want Cruz to run for president again, and they are viewing Cruz’s unsuccessful 2016 run as similar to Reagan’s failed attempt in 1976 to unseat the incumbent Republican president, Gerald Ford.

Appears GOP plantation “conservatives” not focused at all on defeating Hillary and her SCOTUS picks. How principled and conservative of them. I’ve never been more disgusted with the beltway GOP.

It is amazing!!! It is as if 2016 Pres election doesn’t exist for these fools.

Anyone, or any organization that associates themselves with Ted Cruz will be the target of the most derisive of insults...and will most certainly be dead to me.

Nothing much wrong here. They are trying to make him Reagan in 1964. I’m fine with that but not planning on Trump losing as Goldwater did.

Goodness no. I’m strictly a paleo-conservative.
I haven’t the foggiest clue what Trump is though.
Like you said, I’m uninformed and stupid.

Nonsense If you really were a paleo conservative you would not be worried about “what Trump is” in the current environment.

It’s quite simple really. POTUS Hillary = more Orlandos. More dead Americans. True conservatives can see that. Deluded Cruz cultists and corportist Republicans don’t care see that for their own selfish reasons. But as sure the sun comes up POTUS Hillary means more dead Americans. Choose wisely, FRiend.

It is isn’t it. Hillary and her SCOTUS picks mean NOTHING to them. As long as Trump is denied. How selfish and unpatriotic. This is true conservatism? Paleo conservatism?

That’s it. That’s it in a nutshell. It’s the perfect Ruse4Cruz to fool people about his motivations. Throw in a few photos of him leading his family in prayer before a debate and him holding up a Bible, and a lot of Christians fall for it hook, line, & sinker. And I include myself in that category until last Dec/Jan when i started listening and watching him more closely because of an uneasy feeling i was getting while watching him. Then when i dug deeper online... holy cow, what a globalist!

I’ll never be able to vote for him again, mainly because he lied to my entire state by not telling us about his Canadian citizenship in 2012. Can you tell he disgusts me? ;-)

We don't need anymore "True Conservatives" as they all have become whores in the service of the Open Borders Globalists and Neo-Conservative warmongers.

We can win without them.

And, good riddance. I, for one, am TIRED of their holier-than-thou conservative shaming and will be tempted to shoot the next one I see.

No Miss Marmelstein, Ted needs to find a way to discover that he was actually born to a citizen father, along with his presumably citizen mother (she had left a British husband, and possibly renounced her U.S. citizenship to become a British subject, not that it matters given Dad’s Cuban citizenship).

Cruz also needs to find a birth certificate that claims he was born on soil over which the U.S. has total sovereignty, if only an embassy or military hospital on a base made sovereign by Congress (which was the problem McCain was trying to deal with. The Canal Zone wasn’t made sovereign until 1937, the year after his birth, and many children of military personnel born in the Canal Zone needed to apply for naturalization to return to the U.S., though born to U.S. citizens serving in Panama, the very bill, SB 2678, sponsored by Senators Obama and McCaskill in February 2008; yes, they knew the truth, with Obama’s constitutional law professor Larry Tribe, trying to explain away the same problem in the Senate Judiciary hearings on the “Senator John McCain Natural Born Citizen Resolution”, SR 511, in April of 2008.

Cruz lied confidently, as pointed out by Larry Tribe, his (and Obama’s) con. law professor in a Jan 11 2016 Boston Globe op-ed. He should not be confirmed for the any court, and might be prosecuted for accepting campaign donations though legally ineligible; he knew he was safe since the Supreme Court is politicized and corrupt, and had refused certiorari, probably based upon the two Obama appointees, Kagan and Sotomayor, who would have lost millions if Obama had been held to Minor v. Happersett or Wong Kim Ark, or Perkins v. Elg precedent - Minor was sufficient.

Cruz’ good conservative opinions must be questioned as pandering to a community to which he might appear, even with his veiled support for his wife’s Trans Pacific Partnership authorship, and his TPA support, before he didn’t support it. Cruz counts on most not associating the 14th Amendment, based upon the Constitution’s enumerated “naturalization” responsibility, while Article II Section 1 requires that a president be natural born, and not naturalized. He lied. The only way around that fact is to declaim oneself, as did Obama and Tribe, to be a believer in a “Living Constitution:. A living constitution is malleable. For legal purposes, it is whatever the majority, or those with political power want it to be. Allowing a majority, Congress, to reinterpret the Constitution violates Article V. Our framers wanted a bit more protection for our inalienable rights, and provided amendments with 2/3 of Congress and 3/4 of the states. We have ceased to be a constitutional republic. That is not what Cruz and his “conservatives” want you to understand, but to naively accept. The truth is well documented but most don’t read the documents. Cruz counted on your ignorance.

Oh I agree with you, and I will support none of them. Their actions show they don’t care about this country because they are willing to allow Hillary Clinton to appoint Supreme Court justices in order that they can get elected.

“A dog returns to his vomit.”

That’s how the Hill is portraying it but that says more about The Hill returning to it’s vomit.

This is part of the ‘unity process’.
Wouldn’t surprise me if DeMint has a very large role in that process.

Cruz is assuming Trump will suffer a Goldwater type loss. The question is what to do then?

There are three models.

1. The Reagan strategy. Fight as hard as you can for Goldwater and come out looking loyal to the true believers.

2. The Rockefeller strategy. Wipe your hands of Goldwater and go home.

3. The Nixon strategy. Travel the country tirelessly campaigning for House and Senate candidates.

Nixon beat Reagan in the 1968 primaries so I would bet that Cruz will choose the Nixon strategy.

I agree. Cruz loves running his mouth to little actual effect. No way he stands at the barracades for Main Street USA, sticks his hide out for Trump and risks anything. He’s got a career to manage. That wouldn’t be prudent. So what if Hillary wins and installs her SCOTUS picks. Cruz has his millions. His kids won’t die in the streets murdered by criminal aliens or terrorists. Why should he worry at Hillary in the WH?

Some of them TALK a decent conservative line, but beyond that, I cannot define as conservative...

What I do define their actions as is power hungry narcissistic opportunism...Sheesh, planning a run in 2020? Wow confirms who and what Ted is!

The Nixon strategy. Travel the country tirelessly campaigning for House and Senate candidates.

I can't imagine that many House and Senate candidates would want Ted "tirelessly campaigning" for them. Or that very many wanted Nixon.

From what I can get out of Wikipedia, Nixon supported Goldwater, but kept a low profile in 1964. He came back in 1966 and campaigned for Republican Congressional candidates.

It was smarter to invest the energy when Republicans were going to win than when they were going to lose. When the GOP candidates won in 1966 it helped Nixon win respect and the nomination two years later.

Then he squandered it all.

FWIW: Viguerie and Bozell, whatever else you can say about them, were solid conservatives for decades. The Club for Growth guy, though -- he may deserve the abuse directed at the others.

Bingo, mkjessup! It took 61 responses before someone brought up his dicey citizenship issues. That has not gone away, people. He needs to clarify his U.S. citizenship, and my thinking is the reason he avoids doing so, is coz’ he can’t.

Don’t confuse the Never Trumpers with Conservatives. They are not one and the same. The best way to tell them apart is always associate the term ,Never Trump with I support Hillary and also their splinter group cousins, a/k/a, I don’t trust Trumpers. After those are shaken out, the Conservatives are those that remain.
