In the latest and perhaps decisive battle over the role of women in the military, Congress is embroiled in an increasingly intense debate over whether they should have to register for the draft when they turn 18.
On Tuesday, the Senate approved an expansive military policy bill that would for the first time require young women to register for the draft. The shift, while fiercely opposed by some conservative lawmakers and interest groups, had surprisingly broad support among Republican leaders and women in both parties.
The United States has not used the draft since 1973 during the Vietnam War. But the impact of such a shift, reflecting the evolving role of women in the armed services, would likely be profound.
Under the Senate bill passed on Tuesday, women turning 18 on or after Jan. 1, 2018, would be forced to register for Selective Service, as men must do now. Failure to register could result in the loss of various forms of federal aid, including Pell grants, a penalty that men already face. Because the policy would not apply to women who turned 18 before 2018, it would not affect current aid arrangements.
The fact is, said Senator John McCain, Republican of Arizona and the chairman of the Armed Services Committee, every single leader in this country, both men and women, members of the military leadership, believe that its fair since we opened up all aspects of the military to women that they would also be registering for Selective Services.
The Supreme Court ruled in 1981 that women did not have to register for the draft, noting that they should not face the same requirements as men because they did not participate on the front lines of combat.

We have missed a wonderful oppurtunity to place a man in the presidency of high moral and ethical character. May God have mercy on our nation.
Bullsh*t!!! Women want to be EQUAL, AND EQUAL means just that!
Now they want to kill our sons AND DAUGHTERS helping topple tribal governments in the ME
What an evil country we live in.
Since the one they were born with is no longer present, they will need a spine-replacement first.
they didn’t say drafted for combat.. why shouldn’t females be drafted into some sort of service to their country like females in Israel?
I don’t like it, but like you said they cannot have it both ways.
And yet people on FR still damn Cruz for being a GOPe RINO.
We have an all volunteer army.
It figure’s that the AZ RINO voted yes.
if males have to sign up for selective service at 18 so should females.. that doesn’t mean we should return to the draft or that females should ever be drafted for combat which I am totally against,, but in a national emergency I don’t want half of the population’s brains sitting on the sidelines..
Ladies want equality. Well, now you got it!
You’ve come a long way baby!
Having killed our sons as Saudi janissaries for 2 generations, now they seek to kill our daughters that way too.
No one stops women from enlisting. Plenty of them have had war time service. It’s just a big fat data base...and the census would suffice.
This is a damn joke. Why don’t we all just go ahead and slit our wrists. Let the Muslims and the Mexicans have the whole damn thing...
The House GOP should show some spine and oppose drafting women......I have no problem drafting women. We need more secretaries, clerks, cooks, janitors, mechanics, maintenance and management personnel. Frees up fighting personnel.
On the other hand, women who have intention of enlisting or serving in the military are making irrational decisions on military policy “ to support a sister”
These decisions effect the ability of serving soldiers to fight and win in combat and to survive and not get killed on the battle field.
Only a truly idiotic and ignorant woman believes that a woman has a chance to survive in front line combat against men
If we get a few women drafted and be forced to experience ground combat support for women in combat will evaporate and some sanity will return
Oh boo-flippin-hoo.
You want to turn this thread into another sore Cruzer whine fest, go ahead, but don’t expect any sympathy.
