In the latest and perhaps decisive battle over the role of women in the military, Congress is embroiled in an increasingly intense debate over whether they should have to register for the draft when they turn 18.
On Tuesday, the Senate approved an expansive military policy bill that would for the first time require young women to register for the draft. The shift, while fiercely opposed by some conservative lawmakers and interest groups, had surprisingly broad support among Republican leaders and women in both parties.
The United States has not used the draft since 1973 during the Vietnam War. But the impact of such a shift, reflecting the evolving role of women in the armed services, would likely be profound.
Under the Senate bill passed on Tuesday, women turning 18 on or after Jan. 1, 2018, would be forced to register for Selective Service, as men must do now. Failure to register could result in the loss of various forms of federal aid, including Pell grants, a penalty that men already face. Because the policy would not apply to women who turned 18 before 2018, it would not affect current aid arrangements.
The fact is, said Senator John McCain, Republican of Arizona and the chairman of the Armed Services Committee, every single leader in this country, both men and women, members of the military leadership, believe that its fair since we opened up all aspects of the military to women that they would also be registering for Selective Services.
The Supreme Court ruled in 1981 that women did not have to register for the draft, noting that they should not face the same requirements as men because they did not participate on the front lines of combat.

Aw. My father was a wonderful man. I miss him very much since his death in ‘08. My husband is a true man - he loves and reveres women and is a true friend to all men. A much better person than I am, I’m afraid. I have always been closer to men than women - they are much more solid than women. But when men are bad apples, they are the worst.
I will take par since I seem to be competing with a hole in one.
Now you’re sliding down to the Ritz Brothers. Pathetic.
***This thread is a solid case of why I defend and respect only the women close to me, like my wife, child, family, and close friends, but feel no obligation to defend all women as a whole.
Too many women want all the benefits men get, and none of the responsibilities, and use men’s good will against them. I’m not a sucker.***
But you can’t have it both ways. Unfortunately you’re not a dictator of your own little country whereby you can send everyone else’s daughter’s and mothers and wives to war and keep everyone’s else’s daughter’s, wives and mothers from voting and allow it for your wife and children, family and friends.
You have taken it upon yourself to judge all women the same, and we’re not. I’m not a feminist. I hate feminism. Feminism has hurt women mainly by killing millions of them! Feminism has hurt a lot of men too you being Exhibit A.
My father passed away in 1995. Yikes. Blurry screen.
I’m the same. My husband is the kindest person I know. I like both men and women, but in many ways, men are much easier to live with than women.
Who is this “they?”
Nap time. Catch you later Ace.
I know; I miss my dad every day of my life. Yes, men are fine. Although it troubles me when anonymous men on FR show their true colors...
I couldn’t agree more. Those so-called men are not really worthy of our time. They are sad, angry individuals who are unable to appreciate what really matters. That is their loss.
Feminists.
He is a disgrace to anyone who has served in the military and in particular our Navy!
I have asked him to stop replying several times....Please ask him to stop as he is very stubborn.
You really are crazy, you know that - you keep replying again and again, to tell ME to ‘stop replying.’
Get a grip on reality.
I have asked nicely. You refuse. You are a real jerk!
You seem to be confusing "women" with "feminists." Definitely not the same thing. I can't think of a single woman I know who would be in favor of this cruddy piece of legislation.
And you’re mental.
You seem to feel you can post to me as much as you like, but that, for some reason, I should NOT post back.
Try grounding yourself in reality for a change.
“To better understand the current pay discrepancy between male and female nurses, researchers led by Muench used data from the last six quadrennial National Sample Survey of Registered Nurses (NSSRN) for 1988-2008. This mail, electronic and web survey selected a state-based probability sample of currently licensed RNs from data provided by state boards of nursing with a sample size of more than 30,000 RNs per year and response rate of approximately 60 percent.
The NSSRN is ideally suited for analyzing gender differences in the RN workplace because of the large amount of employment information available in this survey compared to other surveys that are typically used by social scientists to study pay differences by gender.
The American Community Survey, a household survey with a 90 percent response rate, also was used to extend the time trends to 2013 and establish that unadjusted salary differences by gender were not limited to the national sample survey.
Both surveys showed that unadjusted male salaries were higher than female salaries every year by an average of approximately $10,000. Male adjusted salaries were, on average, higher by $5,148.
Muench notes that the salary gap is affecting most specialty areas and positions and not improved since 1988, the earliest survey year used by the researchers. Specifically, the gap was $7,678 for ambulatory care and $3,873 for hospital settings. It occurred in all specialties except orthopedics, ranging from $3,792 for chronic care to $6,034 for cardiology. Salary differences also existed by position, ranging from $3,956 for middle management to $17,290 for nurse anesthetists.
Muench said over the course of a 30-year career, female RNs will have earned about $155,000 less than male RNs using the adjusted earnings gap, $300,000 less using the unadjusted gap.”
*** Not false. Facts are a stubborn thing.***

Oh he’s not confusing anything. He seems to dislike ALL women.
Maybe that’s it then....*sigh* Oh well.
