In the latest and perhaps decisive battle over the role of women in the military, Congress is embroiled in an increasingly intense debate over whether they should have to register for the draft when they turn 18.
On Tuesday, the Senate approved an expansive military policy bill that would for the first time require young women to register for the draft. The shift, while fiercely opposed by some conservative lawmakers and interest groups, had surprisingly broad support among Republican leaders and women in both parties.
The United States has not used the draft since 1973 during the Vietnam War. But the impact of such a shift, reflecting the evolving role of women in the armed services, would likely be profound.
Under the Senate bill passed on Tuesday, women turning 18 on or after Jan. 1, 2018, would be forced to register for Selective Service, as men must do now. Failure to register could result in the loss of various forms of federal aid, including Pell grants, a penalty that men already face. Because the policy would not apply to women who turned 18 before 2018, it would not affect current aid arrangements.
The fact is, said Senator John McCain, Republican of Arizona and the chairman of the Armed Services Committee, every single leader in this country, both men and women, members of the military leadership, believe that its fair since we opened up all aspects of the military to women that they would also be registering for Selective Services.
The Supreme Court ruled in 1981 that women did not have to register for the draft, noting that they should not face the same requirements as men because they did not participate on the front lines of combat.

Who asks you to defend women as a whole? Think pretty big of yourself, don’t you?
Happily, I have a man who knows how to respect women even in abstract terms with complete strangers. Plus, I was raised by a real man not a wolf. Pity your wife - if you really have one.
Don’t let them get to you.
Women should have to register at 18 years of age.
“An army marches on its stomach.”
So there would be plenty of noncombat work for women. Cooking, cleaning, etc.
YOU stop replying to my replies to your replies.
Your silly post started all this.
Why don’t you go make your wife a sammich.
I will if you go sit on the couch and spend more quality time with your Aunt.
What a loser comeback.
And just so you all know how I think about a few of these things let me just say:
Yes, I think if a man who makes a baby with a woman does not pay child support, he should have “SOME” of his wages garnished. I don’t think he should be thrown jail if he’s working. It’s stupid and counter productive. How is he going to pay if he loses his job because he’s sitting in jail? If he’s not working or refuses to work, only then would I consider incarceration. Mississippi does not have county prisoners sitting in jail. They are out working. But the same applies to mothers where the fathers are raising them. I know someone who lost her kid to her ex and she had to pay him child support. Oh well, he was the better parent and she made more money. Justice served.
I’m a nurse. ( unable to work right now for health reasons) Historically a role held by women. It was proven that when men started becoming nurses they started making more money than women simply because they were men. That is bull crap. Most men I’ve worked with as nurses do just fine with the clinical and suck at the compassionate part. Men are by nature not nurturers.
I don’t believe in firefighters. I believe in fireMEN. I may make some women mad with this comment but this is why. You don’t want my 5’3 self dragging you out of a burning house cause, we ain’t making it. Me and you both will probably die. And I don’t want a woman trying to drag me out either. Well let me say this, if your my neighbor and you want to try, please try. I’m just saying, I would prefer a 6’3 250lb man dragging my family out of a burning house.
Some roles are meant for men and some for women. I’m sorry if that hurts some people’s feelings. I’m sorry if that makes it hard for you to “identify” your gender or gender role.
But, if me and a man are doing the same job, such as nursing, you should not get paid more just because you have a penis. If we’re both an office administrator, I shouldn’t get paid more because I have ovaries.
Clear enough?
And I don’t like the draft for men or women. Unless something like Red Dawn starts happening. And then we won’t need a draft, we will all be picking up guns wanting to fight anyway.
Congratulations on not being pregnant.
If that is what poses for wit in your world, I’ll send you a book of Oscar Wilde epigrams.
Oh please do. I am not too familiar with works from that period.
I don’t understand it at all, but then, I like strong men. I think that American men are the best in the world.
I hear you. It’s definitely a sign of weakness, imho.
McCain has done much damage to our country. I’m glad that you’ve donated to his opposition.
Well said.
I think American men are great - my husband, father, brother and nephew being prime examples. All my men friends. But these guys here today? Not so much!
If you are familiar, you need to start emulating those works. So far, you’re on the par with the Smothers Brothers.
My father was a mensch. He was career Navy and taught me so much. My husband asked his permission before he proposed to me. That’s what a real man does, imho.
