I did a "road trip" that lasted from June 21, 2009 to Sept 14, 2014. It was supposed to be 2 to 5 weeks. Obama crashed all my contract work. The alternative required being physically on site in a spin-dial room. I saw my wife and kids for a week in June and a week between Christmas and New Year's Day. One exception...I had to go home for a couple weeks in May 2012 to bury my oldest son. I retained my job, but took a big income hit to pay for my out of town living costs and higher state income taxes in CA. I returned home to Idaho in Sept 2014 as my wife was starting her battle with breast cancer. I was immediately reduced to 12 hours a week of paid work and lost my medical coverage. That persisted until Dec 2014. Not much fun. Have been back in the saddle working from home since then.
I didn't enjoy the force separation from my family. Frankly, I think much worse is ahead with a collapsing economy and currency. I want to remain as close to home as possible so I'm not stranded when it goes.
