Speaker Paul Ryans handling of Donald Trump is coming under criticism from Senate Republicans, many of whom prefer the way their leader, Mitch McConnell, deals with the unconventional candidate.
McConnell, the Senate majority leader from Kentucky, has steadfastly declined to call Trump's criticism of a federal judge racist, a term that Ryan (R-Wis.) pointedly deployed.
It sets up journalists to ask, Do you agree with Paul Ryan that it was racist? said an aide to a vulnerable GOP senator
Trump set off a firestorm last week by claiming that a Mexican-American federal judge handling a lawsuit against Trump University was biased because of his heritage.
Republican lawmakers on both sides of the Capitol swiftly expressed strong disapproval, but Ryan ratcheted up the criticism significantly by calling it the textbook definition of a racist comment.
Ryans remarks quickly became a Democratic talking point used to batter vulnerable Senate Republican incumbents.
This morning, Ryan called Donald Trumps attacks on Judge Gonzalo Curiel the textbook definition of racism. Will Johnson join Ryan in calling out Trumps racism? American Bridge, a Democrat-allied communications group, asked in a press release targeting Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), one of the chambers most endangered incumbents.
The group sent out similar releases pressing Republican Sens. Kelly Ayotte (N.H.), Roy Blunt (Mo.), Mark Kirk (Ill.), John McCain (Ariz.), Rob Portman (Ohio) and Pat Toomey (Pa.) to condemn Trumps action as racist.
The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee on Wednesday sent an email to reporters highlighting a Tampa Bay Times article in which three Republican Senate candidates declined to go as far as Ryan.

Don’t you just hate it when Uniparty members can’t get on the same page?
No bigger sellout corrupt politician. he is a demcrat now leading the Republican Party..it has been completely infiltratrated by the globalists
without Gods intervention we are doomed
If Trump wins he should call for a 100% turnover in the congress in the next 4 years.
It is the judge that’s racist.
He is a member of La Raza, which means, “The Race”. It is an organization that supports supremacy of Latin-descended people, except Italians and Portuguese, over all other people, including Jews, Asians and Blacks.
How much more racist can you be?
[If Trump wins he should call for a 100% turnover in the congress in the next 4 years.]
Trump should use these statements by Ryan to publically push for term limits in Congress. He will get HUGE support from the public, both Repubs AND Dems.
Even if term limits don’t happen, considering Congress’s pitiful approval numbers, they will snap in shape very quickly!
Don't let that happen!
Ditch the GOPe's pathetic princeling, Paul Ryan.
There is an alternative.
I am sure that Trump, Manafort, and Sessions are planning their strategy as I type. There will be a price to pay for Ryan's betrayal.
All these GOP “leaders” are selfishly running for POTUS. Ryan, Sasse, Cruz, etc. They care not one bit they are campaigning for the Butcher of Benghazi and her SCOTUS picks.
This. I’m getting tired of him.
I was a fan when he was in Ways & Means, but speaker is way over his head.
I don’t get where these self-annointed “true conservatives” get off on thinking they are sophisticated or what not by taking on liberal positions. He was totally on point when he pointed out the makers and takers, and for whatever odd reason he decided to walk that back. Who is whispering in this guy’s ear? Jeb?
Mike Belling subbed for Rush one day this week. He is a prominent “conservative” radio host in WI.
If you have listened to him then you know Ryan will win in a landslide.
WI is hopelessly liberal.
The comments at source are almost 20 to 1 in favor of Trump and against Ryan.
There is a guy trying to do that, but polls appear to show Ryan as untouchable. He's not going anywhere. If Trump wins, he needs to keep a close watch on Ryan and others of his ilk. Ryan would love to be the Talleyrand to Trump's Napoleon.
Ryan in a nutshell.
Saying things he doesn’t believe and won’t back up or act on.
If Ryan thinks Trump is a racist or says racist things and thinks that is not good then he needs to go on record against Trump and actively and openly work to stop his nomination.
But he won’t do any of that.
He wants to have it all ways an both ways a shakes like a reed in the wind.
I know he’s being challenged. Does anyone know anything about his challenger and how he’s doing in the district?
“There will be a price to pay for Ryan’s betrayal.”
Are you twirling your handle-bar mustache?
Primary, Primary, and Primary again!!! Fumigate DC in November. Start over.
Sorry; I can’t imagine McCarthy being worse.
