The city wants to spend big so there's no bang for Staten Island's bucks.
Comptroller Scott Stringer is allowing the city to fast-track the contracting process on a $2 million plan to perform vasectomies on the borough's male deer.

An unrestrained and expanding deer herd can harm parks and private property, spread tick-borne illness and wander into roads more often, increasing the risk for deadly vehicle collisions.

If the city's plan works ... hundreds of bucks would be tranquilized, captured, given vasectomies and released back onto Staten Island parkland over the course of the three-year study.
Mayor Bill de Blasio and other city officials have agreed that this is the fastest and most humane way to limit further growth of the Island's potentially dangerous white-tailed population.
But several wildlife experts think the plan won't work because the city is ignoring basic deer biology and conventional herd management practices. Some called the proposal "really stupid" and "incredibly foolish."

Agreed. And if they want to ease their consciences, saying all the meat has to go to animal shelters or homeless shelters would be OK.
How about doe season? Maybe up the bag limit. Progressives are idiots.
Liberals have no use for God and they always think they have outthunk God.
I used to work with a bunch of deer hunters. They would bring in deer meat to the fire house and force the rest of us to eat it all the time. I suspected alternately that they were saving the good cuts for themselves, or cleaning Bambi from last year out the freezer. But nothing makes me start to gag more than another firefighter announcing that we would be eating venison for dinner.
And unlike a meal made from some hamburger from the grocery store we all felt obligated to praise the hunter for the meal he prepared no matter how disgusting that it was.
I have been in on the “vasectomy” of farm animals, and any person wise to the means by which that is done, wants to get the job done long before the creature reaches any size. When a hog gets to about 100 pounds or so, or a young male calf gets to maybe a couple hundred pounds, they can almost make it an even fight. When there are twenty to maybe a hundred or so, it can be a pretty tiring day.
I had reindeer steaks in Norway.
They were quite good.

What a waste of money. Scott Stringer, the city controller, is probably the next Mayor of NYC if De Blasio is defeated or indicted. He’s Jewish and could win the Giuliani Democrats in Queens and Brooklyn. Stringer could even win Staten Island, because NYC Republicans are non-existent at this point.
You obviously haven’t had my mom’s deer sauce piquant. She can hunt them, too.
Aparently DiBlasio thinks it is humane to tranquilize a buck against its will and cut its nuts off. Good grief.
I wonder if they are really going to do vasectomies or just castrate the bucks. Big difference.
First thing, 763 deer on The whole of Staten Island, ha! Heck, there are about 300 plus in my immediate area, far, far smaller than SI.
The hormone driven females will still go into heat, so the very lucky bucks which are missed will have a ball given the decreased stag population. Little Bambis all over the place but from smaller gene pool. Lots more male Bambis born during the projected 3 year project term.
Sounds like somebody found the key to the bottomless NYC wallet. Got to get all the males at one go...but...that will never happen as migrating males will come from nearby areas even if they have to swim to find the hot hootchie mamas.
Best effort would be to introduce bow hunting seasons and MAKE MONEY for NYC coffers as well as feeding the homeless and selling venison to the hipster eateries.
You think my grandfather should have been sterilized?
Go to hell.
Funny that this came up—there are chemical and biological means available to alter the fertility of deer and other species; and, they work equally well upon male and female. Also, male aggression is substantially reduced, and the female reproductive drive neutralized.
One effect determined through on-the-job accidents by personnel administering the doses, is the materials work on humans in an equally potent manner. This has the consequence that infertility can be induced for one or more years by inadvertent exposure. This aspect is not widely advertised. The materials also are of restricted availability, thus difficult to source.
Control of an invasive population is possible.
