MANILA, Philippines (AP) The Philippine president-elect has encouraged the public to help him in his war against crime, urging citizens with guns to shoot and kill drug dealers who resist arrest and fight back in their neighborhoods.
In a nationally televised speech late Saturday, Rodrigo Duterte told a huge crowd in the southern city of Davao that Filipinos who help him battle crime will be rewarded.

Actually, there are a number of "dialects" in the Philippines, and although Tagalog is the national language, so is English. But, in Ormoc City, Leyte, Bisaya is the local dialect, which is also used in a number of other provinces.
I can follow most of the Bisaya conversations, due to the heavy influence of Spanish. But, all of the Filipinos (it seems) also include a lot of English words and phrases which allow one to follow the conversation, even if not fully understood.
Roman Catholicism here is largely cultural. There are new Protestant churches starting and more growing every day. So many people are hungry to hear the Word of God. Spreading the Good News (Gospel) is one of the things I enjoy here, as I have a been blessed to know Jesus and have the Holy Spirit indwelling to lead me. I have friends here (also Americans) who regularly teach and preach.
The rise of Duterte is not surprising, but that he gained such popularity all over the 7107 islands is astounding. There is a large entrenched political class here that have dominated since Independence. Corruption is their specialty, and Duterte is against all of that.
I don't know the future, but I am optimistic. My problem is his affinity with the Muzzies, as he is Moro in his lineage. Above all, though, he loves his country and wants to make a difference. Time will tell!
Excuse me while I whip this out...
Yeah, he wants to make a difference....
Rodrigo Duterte, who has been mayor of the southern city of Davao since 1988, made the remarks at a campaign rally, a video of which was posted on YouTube and widely shared on social networking sites.
In the video, he recalled his reaction to a riot by inmates at the Davao jail in 1989, when five missionaries were murdered by the detainees before troops stormed the facility.
One of the missionaries assaulted by the prisoners was 36-year-old Australian Jacqueline Hamil, who Duterte recalled as being beautiful.
There was this Australian lay minister I saw her face and I thought: Son of a bitch. What a pity they raped her, they all lined up. I was mad she was raped but she was so beautiful. I thought, the mayor should have been first, he told the crowd.
no kidding. I thought it was like the sanest thing anyone has said in a long time.
Probably the difference between a suburban home and a Detroit tenement....
Go into any bad neighborhood and see how "unaware" the folks are about who is dealing death and willing to kill to protect the "business" and who is just trying to survive/get along.
This is a very good idea and it should be done here as well. Since no authorities seem to be doing much about the drug dealers who destroy generations of our children, it’s time that citizens pick up their shotguns and do it themselves. Vigilantism is the solution.
libertarians hardest hit..
True most of the time
But not always.
Back in my misspent youth a friend of mines parents were dealing pot out of their house as a second job.
The father was a manager at the local Chrysler plant, owned a night club and lived in one of the newest and best subdivisions in town.
Kind of moot since we are long-distance bystanders at best and really have no real connection other than what we read and our own personal experiences. here's hoping they don't get out of control and end up taking out some good people. More likely that some of the drug dealers would try to take advantage to rid themselves of some competition, but one never really knows until the deed is done.
