Many observers were mystified when Donald Trump attacked New Mexico Republican Gov. Susana Martinez. But the story was really very simple: Martinez hit Trump, so Trump hit back.
*snip*
The Trump-Martinez bewilderment focused on four factors: Martinez is Hispanic, she's a woman, she's a Republican (head of the Republican Governors Association), and she's popular. "I think it sent all the wrong signals," said Newt Gingrich, who has generally been pro-Trump. "You particularly don't want to see your candidate who needs to...get stronger with Latinos, and stronger with women, attack a Latina woman Republican governor."
*snip*
Trump has made a principle of hitting back harder than he is hit. And he has been so effective that many Republicans, elected and not, have decided the smart thing is to refrain from taking on Trump, even if they oppose him.
Not Martinez. In mid-April, the New Mexico governor issued a "remarkably strong rebuke" to Trump, in the words of a Washington Post report, when Martinez spoke to a GOP fundraiser at the home of David Koch in Palm Beach, Florida. Martinez, according to the Post, "did not mince words. She told the crowd of about 60 wealthy GOP backers that, as a Latina, she was offended by Trump's language about immigrants. Noting her years working as a prosecutor on the Mexican border and now as a border-state governor, Martinez said Trump's plan to build a wall and force Mexico to pay for it was unrealistic and irresponsible, according to multiple people in attendance."
Team Trump believes Martinez has continued to criticize him in private since those remarks. And when Trump traveled to Albuquerque, after having clinched the Republican nomination, Martinez told reporters she was "really busy" and did not have time to attend.

I like Trump. He is dead on about Martinez as only DC and Mississippi have a higher percent on food stamps.
We’ve been screwed by the peace at any price idiots who have destroyed our country. I am very happy to see a leader EMERGE WHO KNOWS HOW to hit back. GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO TRUMP!
Wimps are no longer welcome in leadership roles.
Newt is being PC. It is troubling since the “Republican” “latina” is just a shill for the NWO and total destruction of our Constitution and Christian Ethics (Natural Law/Laws of Nature and nature’s God).
Newt has always been part of the Hegelian Dialectic, though. Progressing us into complete slavery. His talk can be great (hit the right chord)-—but his actions (final results of his clamoring) speak volumes—as in the Clinton years. (Results of his revolution????? LOL).
He is a member of the CFR, after all, so just a plant (to help control the narrative) and who has all the right Marxist/fascist friends and morals of the sodomites.
The GWB presidency was an absolute failure PRECISELY BECAUSE he refused to respond to personal attacks from our domestic enemies, the commies. Of course, the Bush clan identifies with the commies much more closely than with conservatives. However, if the Bush clan really intended to play Republican, that would include pretending to fight back against the commie Democrats. None of them has done so. They only fight back against tax-paying, productive citizens.
It is not childish to respond harshly against the very people and ideas that are destroying the USA. IMNSHO, Trump is being far too gentle with them. I would prefer the Democrats and RINOs be exiled to barren, frozen islands along the coast of Alaska, where the big Browns can feast upon them as they wish.
Pinochet exiled tens of thousands of Allende's sycophants after their short few years of communist destruction. Argentina has to "disappear" tens of thousands of communists whenever the humans regain control of their country for short periods. It is the only way a country can survive -- to continually get rid of the invasive, persistent, destructive, parasitic, cancerous communist insects.
And as a result of Pinochet’s actions, Chile is the only country in South America with a decent economy, at least until the socialists ruin it.
Trump plus Gingrich would be the Henry VIII ticket (six wives between them—but none of them beheaded). Newt has his virtues but he would be a bad choice for the VP slot.
Agree 100%. Newt is afraid he will lose his spot on the D.C. cocktail party circuit.
Well said!

And this is the humility we want in the leader of the free world? No we want to play by (your) old rules and send them more money, military equipment etc. when they criticize our President to make them like us.< /sarcasm>
“His talk can be great (hit the right chord)-but his actions (final results of his clamoring) speak volumes”
That’s always been the problem with Newt.
His Christina Jeffreys betrayal was a shining example of Newt talking the talk but abandoning it ASAP in order to act as a PC enforcer. Plus his behavior there reeked of cowardice. Some of the Left actually rode to the poor woman’s rescue, whereas Newt allowed her reputation to be ruined.
This is exactly why I don’t want Newt anywhere near the VP seat. Protect the establishment even though Trump got where he is by going against it. No Newt , I don’t consider him a RINO but I do consider him a loser.
Sana Fe in NM gave me a near heart attack! All I did was drink 3-4 cups of coffee to keep awake during boring lectures in the afternoon, and then had a glass of wine in the evening with my boss. Woke up in middle of night with totally out of control heart rhythm, first ever occurrence! Scared the poop out of me, called ambulance, and the doc in emergency hospital section told me it was the 8000 feet above sea level altitude! He gave me a couple of Xanax, and I was back to normal.
Chile is one of the very very few countries on earth with a retirement system which allows workers to invest in private sector corporations. It has returned much better benefits to retiree’s compared to our 100% government Social Security system.
Yep. I think Newt’s comments about Trump and Martinez pretty much ended Newt’s chances for the Veep.
She’s a fullterm RINO amnesty Governor.
She was on many people's lists of VP possibilities. She blew that all to hell.
Harry Truman said, words to the effect of, “People said I give ‘em hell. I just tell the truth. They think it’s hell.”
I suspect the buck will also stop with Mr. Trump. Over the past 7 1/2 years, it seems that the buck never reached POTUS’ desk, as if he demanded plausible deniability.
You are correct. The entire Obama admin, the entire Clinton admin, the Carter admin. I'm with Shakespeare:
