When Donald Trump collected a few unbound delegates last week, surpassing the 1,237 needed to clinch the Republican nomination for president, expectations that the national convention could be the most dramatic in modern times evaporated.
Now, it will be the most entertaining, said Randy Evans, a party-wise man from Georgia, with a nod to the reality TV stars promise to put some show biz into the July convention in Cleveland.
But there remains an important, unscripted drama yet to unfold in the tempestuous relationship between Trump and his chief rival, U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas.
Although Trump will arrive in Cleveland as the victor and Cruz the vanquished, the politics of the moment suggest that Trump needs Cruz to reassure nervous conservatives more than Cruz needs Trump, whose defeat in November would fulfill Cruzs frequent prediction and best serve the 45-year-old Texans future presidential ambitions.
If he does not endorse and Trump loses, Cruz gets to step out on Nov. 9 and say, See what I said, said Evans, a member of the Republican National Committees Rules Committee who, as chairman of the Republican National Lawyers Association, stayed neutral in the race. +In Cleveland, Trump may need Cruz more than Cruz needs him photo Drew Angerer U.S. Sen. Cruz is a brilliant strategist, a long-term player. Hes got cards to play, and I fully expect him to play a few of those cards, Evans said. I think Cruzs theme will be to say, `Youre the nominee, but Im the party. Youre the name on the ballot, but Im the one who represents, who epitomizes what it means to be a Republican.
Cruz ended his campaign May 3 after a bitter defeat in Indiana, dropping out shortly after lashing out at the man who had spent months calling him Lyin Ted.
This man is a pathological liar, Cruz said of Trump. He doesnt know the difference between truth and lies. He lies practically every word that comes out of his mouth. +In Cleveland, Trump may need Cruz more than Cruz needs him photo Nicholas K. Geranios Jennifer Fetters of Bellevue, Wash., works the Ted Cruz booth at the Washington state GOP convention May 19.
Cruz also called Trump utterly amoral, adding that morality does not exist for him.
I dont see how you can take those words back, particularly if part of your appeal is that youre not a traditional politician, that I tell it like it is, University of Houston political scientist Richard Murray said. I cant see how that would work.
For many admirers of Cruz, the very thought of endorsing Trump remains repugnant. +In Cleveland, Trump may need Cruz more than Cruz needs him photo Rodger Mallison Delegates cheer as Sen. Ted Cruz speaks at the Republican Party of Texas state convention in Dallas on May 14.
Cruz should maintain his sterling conservative brand and stay far away from the Trump train and its inevitable wreckage, said CNN contributor Amanda Carpenter, Cruzs former communications director in the Senate. Even if Trump wins the White House, hell have done it in a low-down, dirty way that no one with any integrity should be proud to endorse.

Cruz is beyond ‘Has Been’, he is a Has Been, Has Been.
What is repugnant is Cruz failing to honor the loyalty oath he signed as a candidate.
Cruz needs Trump much more than Trump needs Cruz.If Cruz can’t get some help from Trump to rehab to his devastated career, then he’s gone.
As Trump soars the nonsense from the discredited and rejected neocons gets thicker and deeper. Don’t know if there is a sewer system anywhere with enough capacity to clean it up.
These elitist shills are going stark raving mad this weekend. All because Hillary is collapsing.
If the Republican Party heeds anything emanating from the Austin American Statesman, another of the ubiquitous Leftist rags published in urban Texas, it is too stupid to hold the presidency.
Cruz is for his own ambition not for the party. He loves the constitution and should be a Supreme Judge.
Nothing for the libs to write about now until Cleveland, so they're going to stir up Trump supporters every chance they get.
Yeah, they insisted that Trump sign the thing; yet, they are the ones who refuse to adhere to the principles of the document.
He lost where he was supposed to win
He lost everywhere that was't a Causes or fraud in Utah and Wisconsin
Surrounding himself with people who will drop him so fast it's unnbeivable
Interesting, is it not, now these lib trashpapers always want to “help” Trump.
Die, MSM, die.
A cruel, but quick, death.
Priceless - the Clinton News Network claims that Cruz benefits from helping Hillary win. he's already next to dead for many of us and his "principled reticence" would be the final nail in the coffin he's been checking out.
If he doesn't offer at least some support, he will be lucky to land a job on the Podunk Circuit Court.....
Sorry I disagree. Cruz has no cards left to play and may in fact have trouble being re-elected to his senate seat in Texas.
Trump really does not need his endorsement and in this day and age endorsements no longer have the meaning and influence they once did.
Cruz probably needs to do some serious fence mending and hope Rick Perry does not decide to run for his seat in 2018.
Damn Scott - exactly my observation. Thanks for saving me the need to post.
Like a darted RINO, #NeverTrumper movement bends to the heavens one last time.
..and not soon enough, a more spiteful arrogant offensive lot of “conservatives” HA!! I have never seen.
Read the headline and thought huh???
Saw it was from the uber lib Austin Statesman and understood.
Cruz has killed whatever political future he thought about having. Eh, adios.
Cruz burned his bridges with Trump with all his lying and delegate theft and corruption. It is my guess that he will try to get some idiots to fund his write in on the Kristol/Beck “Katter day saint-— oops- republicrat ticket. This is absurd. It is absolutely to0 late to get on even half the ballots == some state require 200,000 signatures— Real signatures . The cost just to get on the ballots is estimated at $74 million. The Trump followers would hound these loser at every public utterance. and I think this loser would attract goofy bernie idiots when hillary is indicted. If it’s Cruz, he is absolute toast politically. Kristol is a sick man IMO Needs help like his buddy Beck.
Trump doesn’t need Cruz.
And Cruz is certainly not the party. The party voted for who they wanted. Trump is the party.

@marklevinshow Cruz vowed to support the nominee. We have a nominee. If he doesn't support @realDonaldTrump his words mean nothing period.
“... Randy Evans, a party-wise man from Georgia, with a nod to the reality TV star’s promise to ‘put some show biz’ into the July convention in Cleveland...”

The GOPe faithful ALWAYS put this “reality TV star” BS out in front...They never acknowledge that Trump has been an extremely successful businessman for 40 years.....

“...Cruz’s theme will be to say, ‘You’re the nominee, but I’m the party...”
Would someone please tell Cruz that the people, the voters, the ones who actually count, don’t think so......
