Speaking to CNN's Fareed Zakaria Sunday afternoon, Wall Street Journal's Bret Stephens said that it was important for Donald Trump to lose the general election so utterly that the Republican party and its voters "learn their lesson" and never nominate someone like him ever again.
Stephens has been one of Trump's most outspoken conservative critics, writing in March, for instance, that Trump is essentially an amplified version of Barack Obama. Both men were "epic narcissists who see themselves as singularly suited to redeem an America that is not only imperfect but fundamentally broken," he wrote.
"The candidacy of Donald Trump is the open sewer of American conservatism," he wrote on another occasion.
"I most certainly will not vote for Donald Trump," Stephens told Zakaria, adding that he wanted to "make sure he is the biggest loser in presidential history" in a very long time.
Stephens continued: "It's important that Donald Trump and what he represents this kind of ethnic quote 'conservatism' or populism be so decisively rebuked that the Republican party, the Republican voters learn their lesson that they cannot nominate a man so manifestly unqualified to be president in any way, shape, or form."
They don’t care about the country.
They just don’t want anyone to upset the good scams they have going.
It’s always about the money or the power that brings the money.
Funny thing about your list - which is a good one, but I'd throw Mittens in there too - they're all Jews or Mormons. I must confess that in this election cycle, I've learned a great deal about the contempt that so-called "conservative" Jews and Mormons hold for the rest of us. All I can say is "thank you" for calling attention to yourselves in this fashion, and duly noted.
If he gets his wish, there won’t be a Republican Party (as if there is much of one anyway)
The people who wish Trump ill and a monumental loss are NOT conservative. They are NOT Americans. They ARE treasonous.
Too strong? Anybody that would advocate for SWMNBN would be alright with overturning the Constitution. Ergo, traitors.
Yes, agreed, an incredible election. I see Trump and Sanders cut from the same cloth—revolutionaries. Clinton is the establishment, which is why I think many so-called Republican Never Trump will vote for her directly or indirectly (by not voting). I think more Democrats, though, will opt for Trump. He is the nationalist, the populist, and, to the angst of many, not an ideologue.
I never heard of this ahole Bret Stephens, but I hope a drunk driving illegal Mexican runs over his a$$.
So far this year, “conservative” pundits like Stephens and others have written garbage advocating: 1) steps by the US leading to basically a new world war, either with Russia or Iran or both; 2) the elimination of borders and open immigration leading to the continuing loss of American jobs for those who live on the economic edge to begin with; 3) policies that further destroy urban black communities across the US; 4) this is true - one actually advocated the eradication of the white working class; and now, 5) the promotion and funding of a third party candidate to get Hillary Clinton elected. The latter is exactly what the “party elders” did in Virginia to Ollie North, when they funded the run of Marshall Coleman (his five percent of the vote was enough to cause North to lose by two to LBJ’s son-in-law) and when the former “senator” John Warner not only endorsed Mark Warner, the left Demo over a moderate Republican in last year’s senate race, the boob actually made a commercial for him!! If this is modern “conservatism”, I don’t want ANY part of it, in other words, I want NO part of Stephens, Kristol, Lowry and their cohorts. We don’t have a split in the party - we have a small cohort that needs to get the hell out and go home to the Clinton Democrats from whence they came.
Translation: "We will destroy America so you lowly plebians learn your place. GET BACK ON THE PLANTATION."
There is zero point in voting for a Republican ever again, if THIS is the party.
Bret Stephens said>> who? never heard of him.
The comments on the site posted are Hilarious...
If the GOP imagines that they can “teach me a lesson”, I reckon it is time reciprocate.
I agree with Stephen’s assessment of Trump, but his conclusion that GOP voters must be punished is absurd. Electing Clinton will punish America for generations, probably for good, as it would elect a corrupt liberal for whom rules do not apply to those on her “side”.
For better or worse, we are stuck with Trump. I will vote for him to prevent a Clinton election.
Last night I had dinner with a former Dem elected official, who said much the same thing about Clinton - they were stuck with her as their candidate.
I guess GOP Voters didn’t learn their Lesson in 2008 and 2012, or did they?
You and me both..... You can websearch him but there isn’t anything worthwhile to garner from it.
Make a guillotine?Would take me 2 days,tops.
WOW! He must be Bill Kristal's brother! Did Mr. Stephens ever vet Barack Obama? or did he pile on with the 'first Black president" band wagon regardless of the Obama Marxist record and friends or his bitter wife.
Americans, Conservatives want a man who understands what $20 Trillion in debt means....not some soppy politician who only knows pay to play the Washington game. Brett, you need to get out of your Ivory Tower....Americans are screaming for real change.
After 20 sumthin' years on FR, it really is time for a "like" button. That post sure needs some likes...brilliant!
Why? We have plenty of rope and lamp-posts.
Has anyone asked her what "lesson" America will learn should the Hag become President?
I agree.
Conservative pundits like Stephens and others have the same problem as all Democrats and the Republican Ruling Elite (the "Uniparty"), it's ego, they can't, under any circumstances, admit when they screwed up, and they got it wrong.
Instead, they brazenly ride the hand basket to Hell, dragging everyone else with them, while shouting that the serfs must learn their lesson in Spades.
Funny you should mention... turns out Mr. Stephens was raised in Mexico and, one would assume based on her name, married to a Mexican (legal I’m sure). But it would appear that although he was raised among the elite of Mexico City, he has an inherent bias towards Mexico that aligns with Vincente Fox vs Donald Trump.
