6 Must-See Movies for Memorial Day

What kind of war movies best capture the day set aside in remembrance of the honored dead?

Memorial Day remembers those who have died while serving in the armed forces of the United States—in war or peace. As long as our nation produces these men and women willing to “bear any burden, pay any price,” our nation earns the liberty it enjoys. That is the eternal meaning of this day. When we walk out of a theater profoundly moved by the sacrifice of our soldiers on the screen—those are movies that evoke the sentiment of the day the most.

I have done lists before of the top war films that make you cry, but this is a “Memorial Day” list, so let’s single out those history-based military movies that exclusively highlight the loss of Americans in harm’s way.

Thanks, I will check out “The Beginning or the End”.
“Above and Beyond” I haven’t seen in a long time..IIRC, Robert Taylor became friends with Paul Tibbets.

Actually, I would like to add “United 93” to the list as well.

“They Were Expendable” was based on the true life exploits of alt. John D. Bulk elegy (portrayed as Lt. Brinkley by Robert Montgomery) who was awarded the Medal of Honor for his PT boat operations in the defense of the Phillipines.

Robert Montgomery served on PT boats during WW 2. He also filled in as director for John Ford on the film.

I think my Dad kept the buddies that didn’t make it home in his mind a lot as he tried so hard to live a good life. I saw the same thing in most of the WWII vets that I knew when I was a child. So many were decent men.

I was 13 years old when I realized that liberals were evil, despicable people. It was late 1945 when all the GIs were coming back to my neighborhood (Chelsea district, NYC), some missing body parts or minds.

Almost every newspaper had some columnist wringing their hands about the "coming wave of violence" (WTH???). The meme was that these returning GIs were so addicted to killing and mayhem that they will bring that back to the States and that people better be prepared for the savagery.

Every vet we knew just wanted to get back to a normal life and try to make up for the lost years.

Then in the '50s, when none of their dire predictions proved true, they started snickering that under Ike's administration, society was "boring".

How about the other James Garner World War II classic “The Americanization of Emily”?

Do other Freepers here find the war movies Garner did still watchable and enjoyable even though he was a devout Democrat (not immediately badmouthing him for that, but just curious of others’ opinions here)?
