Agreed, any handwringing about Kristol finding a third party spoiler candidate is premature. One thing is that this “spoiler”could actually help Trump, like John Anderson helped Reagan more than he hurt him in 1980. Anderson received his support primarily from liberal Republicans who likely would have voted for Carter.

So until at such time as Kristol ever finds a sucker to run as a third party spoiler candidate, I will view this all as just entertainment and Kristol trying to remain relevant.

The teacher spelled it "potatoe" on the cue card that was given to Quayle--either because she thought that was the correct spelling or as a set up to make Quayle look stupid.

I have never encountered "potatoe" as the spelling for the plant, but since I haven't read everything that was ever published in English, I could have overlooked cases.

Pelham, you need to take a "lighten-up" pill.   I wasn't mocking Stockdale at all.   Those two lines I posted are called "direct quotes", and came directly from the mouth of Stockdale at the start of his VP debate, as you can see for yourself right here in this youtube video clip:

"Who am I?  Why am I here?"

Notice the big smile on Stockdale's face as he expresses those two questions to start his introduction at that debate, and notice the laughter from the audience when they heard those two questions.   He and they all knew that those were two humorous lines with which to start out that debate.   He was using two of the deepest, most profound philosophical questions we all ask ourselves at some point in our lives as a humorous tool to begin the process to introduce himself to America.

Heros are just as human as everyone else who ever lived, and it is just plain foolish and bizarre to try to remember heros as some kind of delicate freaks whose memory must be delicately shielded from any kind of good-natured, gentle humor involving them.   The late Admiral Stockdale was a strong man, who obviously had a sense of humor, and I'm certain he would not be offended at others seeing the exact same humor he saw when he opened that debate with those two memorable, humor-tinged lines.

(By the way, do you have the same kind of trouble in your reaction to humor involving other heros, like former POW George Washington?)
